Sawfly larvae (Caliroa obsoleta)

Dunrobin area. These small, slug-like larvae of sawflies, are on the underside of a Bur Oak leaf, their preferred food. As adults, they will look like a black wasp, but without the ability to sting!

Great illustration of how they've stripped the surface, exposing the leaf veins. Looks like a jigsaw puzzle coming together!
