Calligrapha beetle (Calligrapha rowena)

Mer Bleue Conservation Area. This beetle was sitting on a dogwood shrub. Thanks to Bug Guide I now know this is Calligrapha rowena. I was greatly puzzled by the unusual pattern. But they say it is probably a "teneral specimen - just emerged from pupa. The spots and stripes take a while to develop. At first the elytra are completely pale yellow and the spots 'fill' progressively in the first hours after emergence."

with less black it seems more conspicuous, and so perhaps more vulnerable...captivating design though, and love the amber legs..

I agree with Chickadee Girl. I was actually going to say the same thing so I won't say it! But, it actually does look like someone painted it! Sorry, couldn't help myself! A really cool beetle, Christine! V
