Water boatman (Sigara sp.)

This is another insect that came to the sheets when mothing in Larose Forest last week. This little creature is a true bug in the Order Hemiptera, and as the name suggests, is an aquatic species. Like the huge diving beetle that also came to the lights at the same time, these insects are also attracted at night, to lights. Other aquatic insects that we saw include Fishflies, and Caddisflies.

Interesting paddles or rudders for hind legs. Interesting too, and to me a little surprising, that they'd leave their aquatic home to come to your light.

Love these guys. Nice shot. It almost looks like a mount! I remember once a friend of
mine caught some of these and some water striders to put into his freshwater aquarium.
Next morning they were all over his walls and his mother was mortified. :-)
