False darkling beetle (Dircaea liturata)

Fletcher Wildlife Garden

Several of us went mothing at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden last night. There were very moths, but lots of midges, caddisflies and various beetles, including a number of this species. They apparently are mainly nocturnal and often can be found at lights. They have an interesting shape and pattern, I think. Members of this family(Melandryidae), eat fungus or rotting wood, according to fellow PBaser Tom Murray, in his fantastic book "Insects of New England and New York".

You always seem to find these strange but beautiful critters.
