Colorado potato beetle (<em>Leptinotarsa decemlineata</em>)
31-AUG-2012 Christine Hanrahan

Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata)

This handsome leaf beetle in the Chrysomelidae Family, is shown here feeding on a Solanum dulcamara plant. The plant is not native to North America, but the beetle is, being from Colorado and adjacnet states, originally, but spreading throughout the US wherever potatoes are grown. Bug Guide says that prior to the introduction of potatoes into many regions, it would have fed on native Solanum plants, no doubt species such as S. nigrum. Notice the red mites on this beetle.

Indeed, a handsome fella. Reminds of the helmet of the Cincinnati Bengals. :)

Well captured. I agree with Torben. In Finland the officials and potato farmers have had an effective control so far... every single vagrant from Russia have been killed immediately....I mean beetle, not the Russians.

Oh, he's pretty! Not sure I would want him in my garden though... looks like he's munched up most of this leaf. Excellent macro! V

I found one on my tomato plants recently and didn't consider it so handsome!! Great capture though!

I remember as a kid that potato farmers were terrified when this beetle was found. Haven't heard anything about it since. This is an excellent shot. It's actually a beautiful beetle. V
