Evening primrose seedhead (Oenothera biennis)

Fletcher Wildlife Garden. The tiny black seeds that are encased in each of the "pods" you see on this plant, feed birds such as finches, chickadees and sparrows. When the seedpods mature they open up as you see here and the seeds, like little grains of pepper, remain at the bottom until the plant falls over, or birds pick them out.
