Umayyad Palace Complex

Amman, Jordan

Seeing a 1300-year-old palace of the Umayyad Caliphate built on and around Roman ruins some 500 years older than that, atop Citadel Hill, reminds you that contemporary Amman is a multi-layered and ancient phenomenon.
I mean, come on, this is some of the new stuff. Other archaeological findings in the area date back to the neolithic (5500-4500 BCE), chalcolithic (4500-3300 BCE), iron age (1200-332 BCE), hellenistic (332-63 BCE) periods.
We have the ruins of malls in the United States that aren't 40 years old.
