The Valley of the Destroyed Communities is a part of Yad Vashem, yet somewhat apart from the rest of the memorial and museum. It is a sculpture garden of stones carved to commemorate the many "Jewish communities destroyed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators, and the few which suffered but survived in the shadow of the holocaust." Major architects for this "maze environment of stone" include Lippa Yahalom and Dan Zur, who received the Israel Prize in 2002. The sculptor Peter Boiger lists it as "his major accomplishment in the area of Holocaust Monuments."
