Located 45 miles south of Charleston on SC 17, this is a holy place.

Beautiful Posting of the Sheldon Church Ruins. I was just there again yesterday and it is always stunning. How sad that Caroline Kinloch Bull, IV fails to keep in mind that this is a church ruin and weddings were a happy part of the history of this church and to carry on until today with weddings is to keep with the historical reality that the Original Bull family would have loved and been comforted to know is still in practice over 250 years later! It's not as old as Europe's on going, ancient and still practicing churches but certainly quite a feat considering it is a ruins! This should be something to rejoice over rather than be disgusted by. Present Bull Family, please reconsider your thinking and rejoice with your ancestor's!

I've been to Sheldon several times and I always get the same feeling. The only way I can describe it is that by praying, the message goes to God's voicemail, where I know He will get it eventually. At Sheldon, I feel as if I have His private phone number.

It's almost a 4-hour trip from Myrtle Beach, but I try to get there at least every couple of years. It is a soul-restoring experience.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I lived in Beaufort for seven years, and before you ask, no, I am not military. Sheldon Church was always a favorite place to visit. Especially when things were going badly, it always made me feel better, just and extremely powerful, peaceful place. I miss it very much.

standing inside the church.:
It is English tradition to bury the dead in the floor of the church.
You were most likely standing upon the grave of one of my ancestors.
The tomb of my 6th generation Grandmother, Mary Bull was vandalized 11 years ago.There wasnot even a police report....- How disgusting.
The Bull family donated the LAND and the MONEY for this ancient structure to be created.
The design was so much a reflection of the life of Lt. Governor William Bull: who is buried as well. .... WAYYYY ahead of it's (his) time.
You were obvious there, as my ancestors were in the process of turning over in thier graves...due to the vandalism.. which makes all of the direct decendants of Stephen Bull of Asley Hall..
1680, ....FEEL WIERD.
High heels from dreaded wedding parties trample this sacred, holy ground anually. - I've personally picked up the cigarrette butts too many times.
For the lady who was asking if there are weddings there,- Quite UNFORTUNATELY...
YES.
St. Helenas Church in Beaufort schedules them, althouigh my family did not leave this church to them.- Contact the "FRIENDS" of Sheldon"
They placed a plaque on this holy ground promoting this activity years ago.
The man himself, though .. is a wonderful person.
The Ruins were left by the Bull family to the EPISCOPAL ARCHDIOSES.- NOT specifically St. Helenas Church.
St. Helenas Church greatly benefits from having weddings there.. although UNCONCERNED, apparently .. at the structural damage that is underway, daily.
This is a gut- wrenching matter to the Members of the Society of the Bull family of
Ashley Hall, as well as the Historical Preservation Foundation.
Burned twice, ..
It still stands............. for now.

I stopped at the ruins today and I was the only one around. it is a truly historic site and I had a weird feeling as I stood inside the church.

My son, his wife and I visited a few years ago because he happened on the site. It piqued his interest because that is his family name.

Our family home is in Beaufort but we live in Augusta. No matter how many times I drive by Sheldon I always can't help but feel something special and I often pull over. I like just sitting there and having a drink and a sandwich. Looking at all the initials people have carved into the bricks over the years and always wondering why such a church was built in that spot. You have many fine pictures and anyone heading that way should pay it a visit. Regards

It's now a couple of years back that I'd visited this special place, and I've been fortunate enough to have been to a few such aged and interesting places.
Notwithstanding Sheldon's inspuration; Two things spring to mind: #1 The Cast Iron Plark at the enterance has enjoyed the round of at least a .45 caliber #2 the presents of the Family Paget within grave site, given some reading of John Gresham envoked my curiosity.

A fine gallery of a very beautiful place. I love ruins of all types...especially when nature is all around or starting to reclaim the area. I particularly like 'Green' and 'Sideview 1'.
