The Porgy House

This was the Folly Beach second home of Charleston authors Dorothy and Dubose Heyward in the 1930's. Dubose Heyward's novel of a crippled black man, Porgy, and his love for a beautiful but undisciplined Bess served as the story line for George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess. Gershwin spent time at the house in both 1933 and 1934 working on the opera.

It was purchased by Myles and Kathy Glick in 1998 after decades of neglect and, at their expense, has been painstakingly restored to better reflect the period of the 1930's. Kathy Glick is currently giving private tours of the land mark. A link to a Post and Courier article about the house and Kathy's contact information is provided. Copy and paste to your browser if the link doesn't work.
