Miles Brewton was among the most financially successful slave traders in Charleston in the mid 18th century. His amassed wealth permitted him to build a mansion on King Street that is considered one of the finest pre-revolutionary dwellings in the United States. His house is surrounded by an impressively high brick wall and fence. This is the ironwork at the top of the fence. Brewton built the house from 1765-69, but lived there for only a short period of time before dying in a shipwreck around 1775.
