Hurricane Irene, though staying several hundred miles off shore, created very strong nor'easter currents which significantly damaged the county park at the west end of Folly. Additional fall storms in 2011 further worsened this process. 20 foot tall dunes under the park's boardwalks were swept away as well as the parking areas. The park is currently closed.
