7: Phat Diem, a very Vietnamese Cathedral

We were shown over the bell tower at the back of the main building with other visiting tourists. When they had departed, our guide had a short conversation with the priest, who then unlocked the side door of the main building so that the two "important Australians" could have a private tour. This main building, the cathedral, was built in the 1890s, but some of the outer buildings look much older. The cathedral was damaged by American bombs, but has been repaired.
