South Georgia & Falklands 2012 (twelve galleries)

The island of South Georgia was the second part of our Aurora Expeditions trip on Polar Pioneer. What makes shore excursions in South Georgia different from what he had experienced before was having to contend with fur seals. Apparently fur seals were hunted almost to extinction, but now that they have recovered and taken over, they are making sure they survive the intrusions of people like us. We were instructed to be wary of them, they are territorial, protective of their young, have big teeth and can come after you quite fast. We were told not to try to outrun them, just make yourself look big by waving something at them and possibly making a noise. Watching the various defensive tactics used by others of our species was just as interesting as watching the fur seals. Mainly bluff on both sides, I think.
