Main street of Yerranderie

Yerranderie, NSW, Australia view map

Yerranderie was already a ghost town when road access was cut by the rising waters of Lake Burragorang,
Sydney's main water supply. That was in the 1950s. Now this part of the old town ("Private Town" as opposed to
"Government Town" just up the road) is owned by a Sydney architect with a serious environmental bent, who
has preserved and restored many of the old buildings. The two-storey former post office offers comfortable
basic accommodatiom (bring your own food and bed linen and cook in the communal kitchen) and there are camp
sites and other alternatives - like "Slippery Norris's". Put "Yerranderie" in Google and you will find a
lot more information and historical pictures, but the recent pictures aren't as good as mine.

Yerranderie looks easy to reach on a map until you get the right map and see the mountains and valleys
in the way, to say nothing of the catchment area for Sydney's water supply, which you cannot cross.
You can fly in, landing on a grass strip in Government Town, (watch the kangaroos) or you can drive in
a long way round (five hours from Sydney). That's what I did, in 1993 when I took these pictures.

2012 update: I have been back after 19 years. Yerranderie is now administered by National Parks and Wildlife Service.
The road in is better, there is a resident caretaker with a real telephone, the paint on The Lodge has faded, some old
buildings have succumbed, the kangaroos are doing well. See http://www.pbase.com/lambsfeathers/t_yerranderie
