Joadja Visitors Day

view map

Joadja in the 1880s and 1890s was a busy little town based on extraction of kerosene from shale. The work stopped
in 1903, the plant dismantled, the town largely destroyed by bushfires, the land sold. These pictures were taken on
the first opportunity for decades that the town site was open to visitors. Thousands of people came, more than had ever
been in Joadja in its heyday. There was land for sale, but most people, like me, came to look and take photographs.
