Album 5: Cooper Creek

This visit to Innamincka and Cooper Creek will be remembered because of (1) the extent of the welcome given to us by the local fly population (2) the utterly barren appearance of the landscape compared with my previous visit (3) a very rewarding two-hour "sunset cruise" on Cooper Creek to watch the birds and the sunset and to be told something of the historical significance of the place. We stayed one night only; it came on to rain after we left, which meant all the roads out could be closed. If we had stayed another few hours, we could have been stuck at our camp on the bank of Cooper Creek for days.

Innamincka is just over the border in South Australia, where clocks are set 30 minutes behind those in the eastern states. When our guide/skipper on the cruise pointed out a whistling duck "at eleven o'clock" ( meaning "fine on the port bow") someone asked "Is that eleven o'clock your time or ours?"
