Ormiston House

Ormiston House is a colonial house in Ormiston overlooking Raby Bay. The house is surrounded by an ornamental garden that still has plantings by its original owner. The property was originally called Woojanness but this was later changed to Ormiston House. Ormiston House was built on a 325-acre sugar property.

Ormiston House was one of the first big houses built in the Redlands. There were many small houses, including slab huts, but Ormiston House is built of bricks that were probably made on site.

It had 16 rooms, with wide verandahs on three sides, a detached (separate) kitchen, servants’ quarters and laundry. It was also one of the first houses in Queensland with the latest in plumbing and heating, including an early flushing toilet.

Ormiston House has functioned as a house museum since the mid-1960s.
