Wow! My former husband did a remote tour at Rockville from Oct '88- Oct '89, and I had the pleasure of joining him. When I saw your photos, especially of the RORO, the memories of a great place and great people came rushing back. Iceland is the most beautiful place I've ever seen! Thanks for sharing your work.

My first tour in the Navy was at Keflavik in 1970. I was newly married and my wife came up as a tourist for six months. We lived with an Icelandic family (in their attic). Helga and Gunnard had a couple teenagers just a few years younger than us and they treated us like we were their own. The island was so quaint. We loved it! I went back about 15 years later and couldn't believe how much it had changed. No longer was it quaint but rather modern. I prefered the quaint.

Rclere - I was stationed Navcomsta Iceland from 74-76. It was one of the most memorable times of my young life... I absolutely loved it there. Am planning to go back for a visit! so many wonderful friends on base and off... great travels country side.. food... I think of this magical place often!

HIii(: just wanted to share, that I am actually from iceland myself(: just wanted to thank you mostly because since i live there, i dont really see 'amazing beauty' in it as much as i would if i went to Hawaii, but when you posted pics like thesse everyone else could see that we do NOT live in igloos (idk how to spell that) and that we are just like America.. it just gets a little colder sometimes haha.. anyway thank you for showing our beauty, i really do take pride in my country(:

I was a Navy WAVE stationed in Keflavik in 74 -75-76 from the plane i thought i was landing on the moon. the northern lights are still the most incredible thing i've ever seen.

I love my Littel island But i have lived her in Us 40yers iceland to me is to cold lol and cost a lot i went home in 04 the Base in kef is gone Rockville is gone lot of good partys held at the club 1964-1965-1966 Iceland is beautiful and if can go and see it u will fall in love with it Hart to leve it thank you for all the beautiful photos

This country is really beautiful and i wonder how beautiful must be its indigenous people. I have never been there but always wath iceland by photograps and clips. I always have a deep wish to live there but alas i dont get some spare days to visit due to my busy job and family. There is a great discrimination with this country. It is known as iceland and people think as if it is covered with ice and had extreame climate. And the reallity is far different it is an amazing country with ful of natural beauty and should be praised and called GREENLAND. I was there from late 75-76 out at rockville,,,,,what a friggen rat hole,,,,cod wars with britan and the blockade of the main gate to the site,,,, running outa fuel oil for the boilers, roofs blowing off during winter storms,, outta commision ball field, gym to work out in ????? sorry burnt down,,, main base was heaven compared to our site,,, even the USO had issues with our location,,, the ONLY good thing was while working as a air weapons tech was working with the local air traffic controllers, the bears blind sided us on more than one occasion

I am from Iceland, and these photos are phenomenal. The scenery is fantastic. I love my country, but I really think us Icelanders can really appreciate the true beauty of our land because we take it for granted. Oh, and Alan... I worked at H-4 (Bolafjall) during summer break in 2007 and 2008. On top of the mountain with crystal clear sky, not even a wisp of a cloud on the sky... The scenery is incredible. If one stands on top of the main building, you can see over to the remains of the army station on top of Straumnes...

My dad was stationed in Iceland from 67 to 69. I was upset when he got orders to Iceland because we were holding out for Hawaii. But as it turns out Iceland was the best place I've ever lived, and I live in Florida now. There was the base bus, the teen club, AT Mahan, the bus stops, the trips to see the rest of the country, and of course base housing! I am going to take my husband there as soon as possible because I think he needs to experience the beauty that is Iceland. I made some wonderful icelandic friends and treasure my time there. Beautiful, Beautiful Photos.

Wonderful pictures. I was a Navy brat, along for the ride back in 1967-1970. Memories of Iceland will forever live within my mind. Any pics of Whale Bay? I spent most of my summers there, talk about an adventure, camping, hiking!

Stationed at NAS Kef 72-73 then at 932nd 77-78. I still think of Iceland and wish there was still a base there. I wish I had travelled more. Made a lot of good friends and worked with alot of Icelanders at 932nd. The pics brought back great memories.

I was stationed at AIMD NAS Keflavik from Nov 97-June 99. I loved every minute of it and will return in the future. I would drive for hours enjoying the scenery. Great photos

Similar to some of your other guests, I was stationed at Keflvik in the mid 1970's. Your pictures reflect the beautiful scenery there. The Icelanders were always courteous and I have very nice memories of the entire country.

when i in my middle school i know iceland first time that 90% power they used from undear earth heats. there havnt pollution, very clear and clean. so i want to go have a look. pictures here are nice. but not less than some chinese palce picture, haha... hope i can to iceland if any chance.....

Great photos. During my tour in Iceland ( Keflavik Naval Station in 1966 and H-2 on the Langanes Peninsula in 66- 67) I took few photos. One of my biggest regrets. Finding your site and referring others to it was great! A lot of memories in your photos. Thank You!

First of all, your pictures are beautiful. I lived in Iceland for 3 years, my husband was stationed at keflavik. It is so gorgeous, the people so friendly, my kids loved it so much they flew back for a second visit. We have never enjoyed a place so much in our life. I worked with all Icelanders on the base and what a blessing it was. No one can really understand the true beauty, the natural wonders and the joy of being in this country until they can visit. Yeah!! Iceland!!! it has been my dreamland since I heard the name of this country first time! And i will definitely go to visit it and even try to settle down there!!! Got the chance to go there for studies once but ...unfortunately just missed it for some reasons. But it is ok as that i am now staying in sweden where is not that far from iceland at all! Beautiful pictures. It didn't look quite that way in 1961 when I was stationed at H-2, and H-3. I would love to go back and visit now that I have seen these pictures. I was stationed at Rockville (H-1) April thru Aug. 1955, then transferred to Hofn (H-3), Sept. thru Feb. 1956. In 1995 my wife and I and her uncle and aunt flew space A to Keflavik and spent four days touring the area. Iceland changed a lot in 40 years. Your pictures are beautiful. We enjoyed them very much. I really enjoyed seeing the pictures of the various landscapes of Iceland. It certainly shows the diversity of the island and the beauty from its boiling pots of mud, to its great mountains, clear lakes and beautiful cities. I was especially glad to see the photos of the small pockets of forest in Iceland and their efforts to reforest much of the country. Great work. Makes me want to go right now.

Thanks for the fantastic photos of Iceland! I lived there in 1964 and 1965. Although your pictures show a much more "modern" Iceland than I remember, much of the landscape brought back many fond memories.

I met my wife in Iceland while stationed there in 1995. It is hard to believe that 8 years have passed. Since then, we have both seperated from the Navy and finished our degrees in Software Engineering. Seeing these pictures really took us back. We are planning to return to Iceland in about two years and celebrate our tenth anniversary there. Had it not been for a fatefull trip to a place neither of us had ever heard of, we might have never met. Thank you for the pictures and the reminder of good times from eight years ago. Thank you for the pleasure of the photos of Iceland. I was assigned to the Keflavik NAS in 1981 & 1982, and I have to admit it was one of the best assignments in my 20 year career in the Air Force. I hope to be able to take my wife up there in the future to show her one of the most interesting, beautiful and clean countries in the world. There is somebody to whom i am most fond, and she is from iceland. Somewhere between watching her wonderful soft blue eyes, her voice pronouncing icelandic, the pictures of a bewitching land, and my deep desire of loosing myself to a nordic place, i just feel I would love to be in iceland, to spend some time there... I'm still figuring out how (job, house, travel) but once I do, I'll get myself a collection of pictures of that handsome country of Iceland. And I'll wish they'd be as beautiful as yours, boy!

Ken: You have a beautiful gallery of Icelandic scenes. I was stationed at H1 (Rockville) in 64-65 and had a chance to see some of the countryside. One thing that I was looking for in your pictures was a Rainbow. The most beautiful Rainbows I have ever seen were in Iceland. Each color stood out clearly. That is because the atmosphere in Iceland is so clean and clear. There is virtually no pollution in Iceland. I also saw the most beautiful Northern Lights while there. Really enjoyed your pictures. I was in Iceland in 1961. I did not get to see pictures or the beauty of the country. I was stationed on H-2, Langanes, and then H-3, Hofn. Your pictures are truly beautiful and I would like to go to some of these places sometime. I have just retired and have more time to enjoy sites like yours. Hey ken, Awesome to see some more people to appreciate iceland, i am half icelandic, and closely connected to my family, actually its the only side of the family i associate with. I go about 2ce a year and am gearing up to go on my winter break from college .. i cant wait to go ont he 23rd of dec. This is a wonderful site with such a variety of views of Iceland. I am a 2nd generation Icelander and closely connected with the Canadian Icelandic community but have never visited the "old country". I have seen such views in the paintings of Luisa Matthiasdottor, shown from time to time here in New York. Thanks again!!!

Hi Ken, I like your pictures much. Iceland is a good place to visit, isn't it? Among all the picutres, I like "Baejarfell Light 2" most. I tried to take some picture of the sky before but I find that the effect is not so good. The sky were very blue at that day but I failed to capture that blue color. Can u tell me how to take a picture that like what u did in "Baejarfell Light 2"? Thanks. ps. I use SLR camera.

I really enjoyed touring Iceland through your magnificent selection of photographs. I was especially taken by the power of such pictures as "Big Sky" and the bonfire scenes. I enjoyed your Iceland pictures. I was once in Iceland briefly years ago. I was flying then Air Icelandic to Europe. We stopped to refuel or something on our way to Luxembourg City. I'm sorry now I didn't have time to look around. Nice work.
