Rockville: The former home of the 932nd ACWS (LOKI).

Latest News: Effective summer 2006 the 932nd Air Control Squadron (ACS) on NAS Keflavik was also deactivated.

The May 2002 pictures were taken during the 50th Anniversary of Air Defense Radar in Iceland. We accompanied some veterans who returned to Iceland for the anniversary as they got a tour of the old site.
The site was being used by an Icelandic Christian organization for drug and alchohol rehabilitation (Which is kind of ironic based on some of the stories I've heard from folks who were stationed at Rockville in the good old days.) I heard rumor the rehab center has also moved from the site. In 2002 only about 50% of the buildings were occupied. The rest were in pretty sad shape.

Chuck, LOL I also hate the cold windy days. We went to the midnight movie and after it was over, the wind was high and snowing. We called ops and they told us to stay put, the wind was 108 mph and a white out. Jerry left anyway and the wind blew him to the fence down bt the gym. After a while we were able to get back to the barracks and no Jerry. A short time later he showed up with his cloths were ripped and a few cuts from the sharp rocks. We never laughed sooooo hard. We painted his boots yellow and threw them up the flag pole..Lee

Lee, I don't remember that that one...but that was 39 or so years ago. I do remember getting called from the bartender to come down and break up a couple fights at the club while on duty. My ribs still hurt in the winter months. I don't know about you, but since leaving the Rock I have never gotten used to the wind...It still seams to go right through me. I am sure we must know one another...I was one of I think 4 MPs ( Air Force) that was stationed there. I don't know if you remember this one, but one morning I was called by the CO to help fetch down a pair of yellow painted combat boots off the flag pole...now that was funny.

Chuck, I worked at the club for my last 6 months as a barback/bartender. I know we must of knowned each other. I loved the ribeye and langostino dinner, and would eat that at the club often. Were you the guard on duty one day and called Ops and told the Lt. that someone was inside the fence? The Lt. gave me and 3 others M16's and told to "shoot to kill" turned out to be a Sgt. and his son picking up trash. No we did not shoot! Ring any bells? lee

Hi there Lee, I was never any good at card playing...lost quite a bit. I spent most of my free time serving food at the club when I wasn't cleaning the weapons in Armory, or pulling 12 hr shifts at the front gate. Do recall playing midnight beer-ball during the summer months....those games would be picked up after the club closed for the night, ( or mornings) ...always fun.

If memories serves me well, and I think it does, Rockville, Iceland was one cold, windy, barely Inhabitable place to be station during the winter. I drank a lot of Sanka instant coffee while working front gate duty....for days on end. I learned the art of throwing stick pin at a dart board wile on that gate....anything to break the hours of boredome The photos you have posted sure look mighty different than the ones I have...dripping tar applied over our barrack roofs to keep the water out...lots of tin foil over our windows to keep the sun out...so we could sleep and we never had grass on the ground...just lots of rocks. It was heartwarming to read the post about my father (Msgt Spurr) here on the site. I don't think he ever really left Iceland - he always spoke fondly about everything and everyone Iceland until he passed on. I remember many days (as a 14 year old)working for Doc at the dispensary, and many a quarter went through my hand into the slots at the club. Thanks for putting this site up.

Sad news...I only found out a couple of days ago that MSgt George Spurr, who was the First Sergeant at Rockville from late '72 to about sometime in '74, has passed away. He was friend and role model to everybody at Rockville. He was also a very good people person.

I was at Rockville as a 276X0 from June, 1978 to July, 1979. Commander was Johnnie Toniolli. Work involved many scrambles of F4s against Bears coming around the Kola peninsula heading to Cuba. Part of the SAT team. Helped paint rocks. A great manager of the club named John Orr made things fantastic: toga parties, DEROS roasts, passing around bottles of sauce to make Red Beer. Worked in the club (the "Orr House") for extra cash and something to do. We would arrange for buses of Navy/USAF ladies to visit the club for social gatherings. Mo Jennies were always welcome, of course. Many stories like the attempt by a group of folks to drive a "borrowed" SeaBee forklift to town. Air Force: A great way of life!

Hi Nancy, it was great seeing you sign the guestbook and your comments including our border collie "Princess", so many times after leaving the "Club", she would follow me back to "Buch Country" barracks and take up a warm spot on the floor and enjoy a nice night sleeping in out of the cold. I remember you well and how you used to send me pics and updates of you and your daughter soon after you returned to the USA. I was there Jan 75 - Jul 76. I got a 1 year extension, but had to leave early, as it was a very fertile year, for WAF, WAVES, sheep, etc. Who remembers the site dogs? The collie mix. Princess, if I remember correctly, bonded with me and would occasionally ride the bus with me back to my barracks at Kef, then back to Rockville the next morning. I really loved Iceland; the people, the food, the landscape, the fresh air and water, and being a scope dope in the manual system.

Hello: Joe My barracks was the one before yours (2ed to last on right). I think Art Pidilla and Duane Kelsey were in Tec school with me along with Jerry Thigpen and Richard Austin. Your name and some of the others sount familiar. We played a lot of cards at NCO club. 7 card high/low split (joker wild) when we had money and double deck pinochle when broke. I got my second strip in Iceland so if you were a Sgt. I must have met you in Iceland. Most of the guys in my tec school went to alaska or iceland. I think I still have my orders for Iceland someplace, which will have all the names of those that got there the same time I did. I will look for them after I move and post here. We had a hell of a year, Do you recall the volcano went off, Bobby Fisher won the chess championship over Boris Spaski, the Ussr Sub went down off the coast, A USAF pilot crashed in the ocean and was never found. We almost shot that Sgt and his son inside the restricted area, the NCO club had a party every 3 months for those who were going back to the states, man what a party!! Jerry would bring the Icelandic girls back to the barracks, we had to guard the doors so as not to get cought. After Iceland, went to McChord AFB Tacoma WA. made Sgt. and got out in 1975.

Lee Gilroy Mar 72 to Mar 73, lived in Noose Lodge, last room on right, Rockville. It was my first duty station out of basic and school. Worked in ops, scope dope, behind the big board as plotter and radio ops. Talked to fling radar (Adola). The LT. got a call that someone was inside the fence, He gave us M16 and told to shoot first and ask questions later. (we had threats in the months leading up to this) It turned out to be a Sgt. and his son picking up trash. Went to the movie one night after midnight chow and when we got out at 2am the wind was 108 mph and snowing, we ha to stay put but Jerry Thigpen tried to make it back to the barrecks. when we got back Jerry was not back yet. The wind blew him all the way to the fence line, he was beat up good but still alive. Worked as a part time bartender the last 6 months at the NCO club. Everyone went to the nco club to play cards and get a good ribeye. Anyone who was at rockville at that time please reply.

It was certainly a country of rugged beauty with most of the locals I met and worked with being extremely nice folks. I've often talked of going back one day to see the country again.

Thanks Joe, for your earlier post and response to my question about whereabouts of some of our coworkers at Rockville. I was already aware of Chief Paulmenn's address in Phoenix and his email address. Just got a Christmas card and annual Christmas letter from Chief. I'm very saddened to hear that he and his wife JoAnn aren't doing too well as they deal with their health issues. Anybody out there who knows Chief, I'm sure he would love to hear from you. I worked on Chief Paulmenn's grey Volvo he affectionately called "the goose" and he was my boss in Radar Ops. A great guy to work for.

I came up in the fall of 1968 from Robbins AFB, GA, TDY, and our 2865 GEEIA team tore down the inflatable bubbles over the radars and replaced them with fiberglass panels. I remember we termed them, "Rigid Radome". We were there only a few weeks, and I only got to go into town one Sunday. I remember Iceland was a very interesting place. I enjoyed my short visit.

I spent Thanksgiving 1962 at Rockville, Iceland. We were thankful just to still be alive as this was only a month after the Cuban Missile Crisis. Our mess sergeant was an old-timer named MSgt Maxwell. At the time, I was only 19, he must have been in his 40's. He was a crusty character, but must have been very good at his job. We ate like kings. I gained 20 pounds that year and have not lost it yet.

Don't remember Thanksgiving at Rockville in 1953 but know I was one of the few to open the 932nd.Had a ball at the site.Opened the NCO club Girls arrived by6x6's.Only the search radar was operational FPS-3.

I was stationed there from 91-92, and I remember MSgt Boling very well. Those were great times in the Air Force back then. I never would have thought that such an isolated assignment could be so fun. It was the great men and women of the squadron that made the place unforgettable. Thanks for the many wonderful memories.

It was the spring of 82...our Squadron "VMFA-251" 12-F4S Phantoms and a C5 Galaxie arrived to temporaily replace the 57th TFS F4 Squadron, while they went on vacation in Florida. As a young Marine Cpl (supply expiditer) I recall the beautiful scenery of Iceland. The food there was unique, I enjoyed the Lamb dogs, with that mystery sauce, and the Ice Cream was awesome. We were only there for a month but I had a blast, and brought home some wool blankets and the famous backwards zipper sweater. It was almost 24 hrs of daylight during my stay. After our TAD/TDY tour we went on to England for a couple of days via C5 Galaxie, then onto Goosebay for refuling and a replacement aircraft (C-141) since they couldn't keep the C5 flying. our final destination was at Beaufort, SC, where my permanent station was. Within a month we were off again, this time to Rosey Roads, PR. Would love to hear from anyone(any branch) that was there! Thanks for the memories!

Stationed at Kef 76-77, 81-84, 86-87. Spent many evenings at the Rockville Club. Good food and great times. We calibrated all their test equipment. Sorry to know everything there was abandoned. Such good times.

Sorry to say I was one of the ones who shut her down in 1998. We were still fully operational in shadow of the "New Icelandic Control Center" they built on Keflavik NAS for 1 year while they certified their OPs. Funny to see that they still haven't done much with the site. After the C.E. unit left the gym went down hill. All the tounge and groove flooring couldn't take the temperature changes and buckled and worped! Sorry to see the 932d go.

Chris, I was stationed there at the same time...may1972-may1973 was the I.D. tech in radar ops(teletype machine,and a small plotting board, on the lower tier,to the left of the main plotting board. I talked to Chief Paulmenn last week... he's doing well,and retired in Phoenix,Az,(swordfishharry@aol.com).Sure he'd love to hear from you. Didn't know any of the other names. You might have known Cardova(mp),Padilla(ops),Dana&Ann Sydney,(dana-ops),Kelsey(ops) Parlin(ops)or Nakamura(ops)...all were there in1972-1973.

Was stationed at Rockville from Sep 72 to Sep 74. Assigned to 932nd AC&W Squadron as Radar Operations Clerk Worked for CMSgt Forman and later CMSgt Paulmenn who were NCOIC of Radar Operations. Commander was Lt Col Richard Overland. Lived in Loftleider Annex #2 until wife accompanied me and arrived in Jan 73. Then moved to small apartment at Haaleiti #15, Keflavik and later onto the base in Quarters 606-F (near post office). Does anybody know what happened to Michael Petchel who was a scope dope? Also, does anybody know whereabouts of Michael Batcho, Bob Dashineau, Bill Waites or Al Ahlmann?

I remember her well and the smile she gave us all!!! Such a cold place and yet a warm and refreshing smile from a very beautiful red head. Awesome pics. I was there '95 - '96. Surprised this came up in the search. Except for the club being in shambles, it looks about the same to me. I remember my nightly jogs to the gym, in shorts and a parka, in 35 knot winds. Blasting music and shooting baskets in-between reps. Heh, the gym had a sauna! Remember running a LAN in the dorm to play Doom. Almost breaking my ribs skiing on Blue Mountain. All the alcoholics. The sulfurous smell from the taps. Thanksgiving at Sgt Halvorson's place. Traynor's hot hot Icelandic girlfriend. Bastard! Haha, good times!

I lived in Bush Country Barracks, first starting off in a room I could barely move around in was more like a closet than a room!!! And, of yes come the summer had to place alum.foil on the window so I could get some sleep at night. The guys in the Security Police Barrackes were quite innovative as they were preparing for a barracks inspection in the Latrine they had made signs at the urinal stating "Small Arms Firing Range" and at the Commodes, the signs read "Heavy Weapons Unloading Area". Needless to say, we always tried to put a bit of a smile on our Commander, Lt. James Young. It was a great year and I enjoyed every minute of it and would love to go back for a visit, and help bring back some more memories, of a time well spent defending our great nation, the United States of America. I was at Rockville in 1976-77, assigned as NCOIC, Security Police. It was quite a challenge to build a force of some 50 augmentees to help defend the installation, alng with supervising 5 Security Policemen. I enjoyed our Sunday Pinocchle Games at the Club, and the many entertaining Saturday evenings and great dining also at the Club.

Becky Johnson 87-88 WOW oh WOW. I was looking up recipes for fried ysa and look what I found. Rogers comments made me smile remembering how crazy that year was and all the wacky stuff we did to stay occupied. The guys "painted" piles of driven snow with food coloring. All those games of pictionary and Trivial Pursuit in the greenhouse, the movies, the hot tub (shhh). I can't remember his name but that crazy guy who ran the chow hall "Fried Squid! who crank out raw steak for us when we were all loaded. Roxanne and I whooping it up at the club. Jon Gates Stationed their twice - 80-81 and 88-89. I was a shift boss the first time (276X0) and the NCOIC of Training the second. Came back to inspect my area as part of the ACC IG Team a few years later - of course it did well! Many memories - including getting stuck overnight during a bus tour to Gulfoss because of a Hurricane! Sad to see it is all gone.

1971-1972 Lived at Rockville, Navy Receiver site. We were in the yellow barracks "Iam Curious" beside the Gym. Had great memories and my Wife and I have been back a couple times. A Great bunch of guys at the Navy Receiver site and good chow hall and dinners at the club. Traveled a lot over the country with my Austin Gypsy and Land Rover and sad to see the base gone? Haunted-no ..just the best sleep I ever had with the wind whistling around the barracks! Bless.

It looked a lot like the Land of the Lost when we went on a camping trip and hiking on my Birthday(August 31), and I dranked "moon shine" for the first. It was really warm goind down. I was an engine mechanic on the EC-121s out of McClellan AFB and flew many or the rotation birds in to Kef and back to California. We�d leave McClellan and 12 hours later land at Wright Patterson. Take off in the morning and8 hours later land at Goose Bay for fuel. Take off and 6 hours later land at Kef. Get off one Connie get on another and head home � 24 hours up and 24 hours back. The most striking memory I have is of ol �Kef Katie.�

I was there in 56 and 57.Guess not too many comments from that time as it was pretty primative then.Quanset huts and chain strung from building to building so the little guys wouldn't get blown away.We lost one fighter from a cross wind.Another time the weather was so bad we couldn't get food supplies in.Had goat,cheese.and goats milk for several weeks.The NCO club was OK but not like in the later years.Get a little too much to drink and climbing the back of the height finder was a rush.

Great pics, just like I remember it back in June 89 - June 90. Had a lot of good times making videos and drinking mass quantities with Sven, Chris, Jan, and Wes. I remember raiding the RORO bar (who didn't? - I laugh at your ciper lock!), walking to the tower to reload the Mode-4 at midnight, the hot tub, DEROS parties, driving 100mph in my RX-7 on the road from Kef to Rockville, the mail call siren in the afternoon, the little BX, Greenhouse parties, the northern lights, helping mop the floors in the ops room before break, yelling FLUSH! to avoid scalding anyone in the shower, Viking Thunder, the video jukebox in the RCOM, RTN movie channel, morale calls from the room next to the switchboard. That was almost 20 years ago. There's nothing left on the site now except the concrete slabs, which look like huge gravestones from an ancient burial ground. I hid the fuzzy book! Does anyone remember that? It was an interesting experience for a 23-year old but I wouldn't want to do it again.

Thanks for the memories. I was stationed at Rockville from May or 62 to May of 63. It was all Quanset huts then. We did have a Teakwood bar in the NCO club. If I remember correctly it cost $4,000 in 1962. There was and article about it in the Air Force newspaper. I Believe it was dubbed the "Cadillac in a barn". I spent way too much time at that Teakwood bar. We also had 3 or 4 slots right next to the bar. I worked in the power plant while I was there. that mail room looks real familiar. I wish I could remember my box number.

Teddie, Not just the small lobster (scampi) but those GREAT STEAKS at the club. I actually helped out in that small 20X10 dining room for a couple of weeks when the manager got in a bind. The only names I can remember were Capt. Chuck Nordick (from either Oregon or Washington), Sgt. Beaver, Sgt. Goodin, "Chief" Jaimez (from around San Diago), Sgt Dale Bruner from Georgia (my original home). SADLY: from what I recently heard, the entire site has been town down and cleaned out due to the dilapadated condition of the buildings. I wasn't exactly "stationed" at Rockville, but my dad was. From Jan 1967 to the summer of 1968, then he was transfered upbase and we left Iceland the fall of 1969. Dad's name was Tom Colvin and he ran the little BX on site. We spent many Sunday afternoons at the club after having brunch at the chow-hall. We would play the nickel slots and play the jukebox for hours. There was this one young airman that was really homesick and would play the song "Pop a Top Again" over and over. I have no idea what his real name was, but his nickname was "Tex." I remember having a Thanksgiving and a Christmas dinner or two at Rockville. I have so many great memories of Rockville and of Iceland itself. We also knew Jerry Lyons' friend Gunnar. I am still spoiled from the baby lobster tails and cases of haddock and halibut that he used to give us. Just can't get stuff like that here in the states. I have to say, of all the places that we lived growing up, Iceland was the best assignment we ever had. The country and the people are awesome.

I was at the Rockville 932nd ACWS, from May 1986 until May 1987. Was my first remote (the other was Shemya). Met some great people like Carter Rowlette, who was just a kid at the time. Frenchy Dubois ran the club. Went to the gym alot or to the club. We had 2 AFRTS stations to choose from. Got some tapes from the states every now and them. Lt Col Gavette was the first commander when I got there. Col. Dennis Shepperd was his replacement. I worked for Lt. King who was then replaced by Capt John Fynan. The softball team in 1986 was pretty damn good. Frenchy and about 6-7 others in that lineup like Rick (Pepe Perez) Serna clobbered a crap load of homers. Best softball team in my military career I ever saw. Worked with Ditta in the main HQ building. If I remember correctly, she had no issues with wearing no bra and wearing see-thru blouses and shirts. Made for positive work days. LMAO!!! I haven't ran into too many in person who were at Rockville like I have those who were at Shemya. Hope to someday, although living in Colorado Springs now, I'm sure alot of those old 276's live here now because of duty at Cheyenne Mountain.

I was there from 1998-2000 part of the weapons Depart (navy) the winter that kept us at work was 1999 - the year we started NAS KEFLAVIK PAINTBALL ASSOC. i was on duty and had to stay at the shop till 1800 and the storm hit us around 1300 - we locked the gates of the compound with just 9 men our gunner and senior called us around 2000 telling us to hold tight and help will be on the way, the snow drifts were well over 12ft easy - we raided the gedunk (navy term for snacks) machines through the night and left in my truck the next morning aroun 0900 afer digging out the gate for 1hr - thanks for the memories sad that NAS KEFLAVIK is gone for ever ---

I was stationed at Rockville from September, 1972 until September, 1974. Seems like only yesterday. Lived in "Loftleider Annex #2" when I first arrived, but since I was accompanied, I found an apartment at Haaleiti $15, Keflavik, until moving onto Keflavik Base in January, 1973 into Quarters 606-F, near old Quonset Hut Post Office. I was the Radar Opertions Clerk and worked in Radar Operations. Spent a lot of time in the darkroom, however and the food at the "Hustle Inn" Dining Hall at Rockville (as it was called at the time) wasn't bad. Had lots of fun playing cards in the NOO Club (forgot the nickname it had). Enjoyed hiking with a local hiking club on base known as the "Iceland Rovers" Bought an old vehicle so I could drive around the island; went to Gulfoss and Mt. Hekla a few times; went to a few clubs in Reykjavik; overall had a good time, but was ready to leave when the two years rolled around. Would like to go back someday...

White-out and shoveling the supply truck to the main road. Hearing how the 102's were missed. Kroner Poker. Cheeseburger pizza. Customs checks (ruined at least one party by letting the ice cream melt). Watching the Concord test flights on scope. Lime/neon Green will forever be Streetwalker Green to me. I still say "Yow Yow" now and then. The last piece of audio equipment I bought there, Pioneer speakers, went to the thrift shop earlier this year.

I was stationed at the Rockville, Iceland radar site from Sept 1990 to Sept 1991. I was assigned as NCOIC of the Orderly Room. My memories are of the times I spend at the NCO Club, and at the movie theater, base exchange (it was a small one), and hanging around with a few of the guys I was stationed there with. I remember one day in particular when it was very windy, and I was walking back to the dorm from the HQ building, when a large gust of wind stripped the glasses off my face and threw them several feet away. I had to have them repaired due to the damage that was done. If there is anybody out there who was stationed there about the time I was, please contact me. I would like to hear from you.

I spent a year at Rockville in 1963-64. Wasn't the best year of my life. I was an immature kid of 18. My first child was born half way through my tour. What I remember is drinking too much and boring shifts as a radar operator. It's interesting that there are no post going back to my time. When I was there the place was old --- it was a ww2 radar site. It's interesting to Google Earth the site because it looks exactly the same as then. Hey, a fifth of Crown Royal was $1.95 an 40oz. bottle of Canadian Club was the same. How bad could that be.

I was there Fm Aug 86'-Aug 87' My first Assignment as a 276! The things I remember were the People! Tony Doherty, Marc Stigler, Mike "Spyke" Rooney, Joe "SKI" Piztasakowski? P+12 and ally Ellis. I could list 20 more. My PO box # was 1217-R. The Club had that great picture of the Bear H intercept on the wall and the cartoon site pic over the stage, it was 80 cents for a bottle of Bud. Booze and The Mr Do video game got all my money. I do remember Don Boyer as Club mgr (Ithink he had to kick me out a time or two)Operationally I remember the 20+ foot plotting boards & writing backwards, 10-line boxes with those sweet sounding ladies fm Buchans, "Ello love"! and those archaic teletypes! It was Operational procedures frozen in time!

I spent 2 years on an accompanied tour and it was probably easier having my wife there. I think she became the station dance partner. I was there during the first part of Lt Col Troy's assignment. I also ran the Intramural Bowling Program for Keplavic. I now own a small restaurant in Brandon Florida, just east of Tampa. Retired in 1992 from MacDill. On a side note, I did have to do a quasi IG inspection at Hofn while I was stationed there.

The story is the base commander Col.Pietrika had just warned everyone of the hazards of driving in Iceland and then racks up his vehicle on a rock just outside of the main gate. Was at Rockville TDY for 6 months in 1969 while my AWACS out of McCoy AFB in Orlando was flying out of the Goose. Loved it. Loved those Icelandic Lobster at the club at Rockville. Went out several times on "Gunnars" trawler based in a small village outside Keflavik, Gadir I think. We enjoyed going to Loftleider Hotel in Reykjavik on Saturday nights. Trips to Selfos were great. I well remember the radicals burning the American flag 50 feet from the U.S. Marine shack at the Rockville gate. All we could do was "keep our mouths shut and bit our tongues. I want to take my wife to Iceland one day but most likely my good friend and co-worker, Lanue will beat me there. Maybe he will drive out and take a look at the old place. My fondest memories was hitchiking back and forth to Goose Bay/Happy Valley Labrador where I flew weekend shuttles hauling doctors/nurses/vets to the Inuit villages. That was a joint U.S./Canadian Air Force and EPA Airlines venture. It was a program called "aid to Indiginous Peoples". I was stationed at Rockville 1969-70. My profession was 'arteest'. Nobody knew what to do with me.An artist for Rockville? I became the 'DEROS Party Social Director' or DEROS PSD. Did we or did we not have parties? Higher up officers and some wierd NCO's wanted me destroyed...having too much of a good time, however, I had friends in high places and survived the psyco-airforce partypoopers. Good God we scared ourselves. Drank enough to destroy vital organs. I haven't been right since. The ladies of Keflvik were so darn friendly. Taking unsuspecting airman to their lairs. Oh! The memories. I learned so much from them. How to knit, and look for 'little people'. You wouldn't believe where I found little people! Oh! Of couse there were many disturbing and depressing days, however more drinking took care of that. I always thought it ws better than Vietnam. Less combat. To turn Rockville into a rehab center is an abomination of the sacred. Also: The place is haunted. Anybody experience strange and mysterious events there? Besides the food. These days I am a professional artist, still drinking. I am creating artwork of Rockville. im currently stationed in kef, navy side, but looking at these pics from 15 yrs ago is amazing. we make routine security checks on everyday, the icelandics use it for ghost hunting and other nonsense. there is nothgin left there at all. the buildings all stand but all the doors are kicked in windows broken and a place for the homeless, right now it is pretty much a landfill, hope you guys had more fun there then i do...

Your site brought back very fond memories for my wife Sue and I. We were both assigned to the 932nd from 1976-78 but lived on main base. We made a lot of friends and have a lot of great memories. I watched the last EC-121 with an active height finder burn on the taxi way after a gear collapsed... Listened to a US pilot descend to his cold, watery death after his private Piper ran out of fuel... camped at Thingvillier with friends... watched the midnight sun barely dip below the horizon... laughed as my drunk co-workers on one year tours went out into the rocks to fight the "devil birds..." sufferd from the incredible stench of "Kef Katie" when the wind blew in the wrong direction... puked my guts out on a fishing trawler... woke when the F-4Es came howling back back from bear hunting in the wee hours of the morning... watched cockroaches move our furniture around and wondered how in the hell they got to Iceland (Duh... the NAVY!)... and let my visiting 8 year old brother watch us intercept some bears in the ops center. Good times, good friends.

Thanks for sharing your pictures and memories!! From December 1976 until March 1978 I was the Commander's secretary first to Lt Col John G. Young and then Lt Col Johnnie Toniolli. At the time I was an Air Force spouse and drove back and forth from Keflavik. Those of you stationed there have many more memories than I do. However, I did eat some great food in the chow hall, drank several drinks in the club, had a blast as the DEROS parties and made some really good friends. Thank you!!

Seems like a moment in time since my family and I were stationed at Keflavik in 1988-89. I worked at the 932nd Air Defense Squadron with Lt Col Terry Troy, Commander and later Lt Col Billy Wooley, Commander. One of the finest NCOs I've ever met ran the Orderly Room, MSgt Juan C. Villarreal. What a team we were. A major accomplishment was floating the chapel from Hofn to Keflavik, trucking it to Rockville, and placing it on a solid foundation. My children--Jeanne, Kristina, and Andrew--helped at the church dedication ceremonies. My wife, Julie, helped cook at many chili suppers at the USO on Keflavik and spaghetti suppers at Rockville. The unit also started a college program at Rockville through the City Colleges of Chicago and many people picked up a few credits when they weren't at the club. This was the single best assignment we ever had in the Air Force!! Thanks for the memories. Lt Col Doug Kveene

Ken: Thanks for the memories. I was stationed at Rockville from July 2, 1994 to July 1, 1995. It was a tough year, but I have fond memories of the good times. Like Juan, I remember the taste of the isa well. What a terrific meal. I'll never forget the one time I ate a healthy helping of isa, just to come out of the chow hall and met by the fine smell of the Sandgherdi (sp?) Wind (those that have smelled it will know exactly what I mean). I had to run over to the side door of the HQ (to the mailboxes) to take shelter so as not to waste the fine meal I had just consumed. I also remember: - Bonfires in the middle of winter at the dump site. Hanging out in parkas, 'round the fire, passing our favorite bottle of hooch, watching the Northern Lights. - Late nights at the RORO, drinking Crown and Coke and smoking cigars from our cross-training visitors, the Puerto Rican Air National Guard. - Hosing departing folks down with the fire truck at the flag pole in front of the HQ. - "The Dog Pound" - Hanging out at the shoppette while pulling RTN (Rockville Television Network) video rental duty. - Spending sometimes up to 4 hours a day at the gym, just to go over to the RCOM and undo all the hard work you put in - Way too many nights spent at the RCOM (was there two of them or did I just always see double after spending time there?) - and the list goes on. What a year! Thanks again for the memories.

Was stationed at Rockville from April, 1977 through March, 1979 as AC&W Radar Maintenance. Originally a 1 year PCS, I extended for a year. Met some of the finest people in the world there - American and Icelandic. I'm sorry to see the current condition of the place, particularly the radar towers, but it sure brought back some good memories. Many thanks for the photos!

I remember the winter of 88-89. It was bitter but it made the visits to the club that much better. Thanks for the great memories. This sure brings back memories.. From fall of 1966 through Dec `1969, I was with 1st AF IG - out of Stewart AFB. Newburgh.NY. I was the IG inspector for Radar Operations - and several other "cats and dogs". Went to Rockville and Hofn. While at Rockville, I met an Icelandic named Gunnar Gutleifson, a commercial fisherman. Had his own fleet of fishing boats - and even shipped his catches to Italy and Japan... He also had his own flash freezing plant, right outside of Rockville. He was a super guy and - incidently - the third richest man in Iceland.... Was negotiating to buy a Ford Mustang (red) and having it shipped there. Cost was going to be four times what it would have been to buy one in the states - because of import tariffs. I recall that liquor could not be taken off the site - and only one roll of film - besides the one in your camera. I have lots of nostalgia over this one. Interior of Club looks familiar....Thanks for sharing!!! Yes - this was truly - nostalgia....

15 Aug 78 to 15 Aug 79, one year to the day I spent one year of my life there. Looks the same today as it looked back then. Thanks for building the web site, a nice piece of history.

I was there Jul88 thru Jul89 and it looks a lot like the same except for the consolidated club. Had some damn great times there including getting LtCol. Troy the commander to walk the bar during his and my Hail and farewell. I was acting 1st Sgt. as a Tsgt. lot of good and bad memories. Mostly good.
