Hć Ken,
Flottar myndir!!!! You've done a beautiful job at capturing these pics. I was born in Reykjavik and raised in Ytri Njarđvik - Keflavik Iceland. Things will never be the same there with NAS gone. I'm so glad to see that so many have fond memories of Iceland.
Thx Ester, Phoenix, AZ

Hello Ken. I've been reading all of the comments on your guestbook. You've really captured the natural beauty of Iceland which brought back so many memories for so many.
I was stationed at Marine Barracks from 1964-65. Most of that time, I was the Marine driver for R/Adms Buie and Weymouth..Jackie Criswell of BARLANT staff was the Navy driver. I married an Icelandic girl at the church in Arbaer and we've been going back to Iceland ever since. You've got a great eye. Thanks for the photos.

I enjoyed your pictures. I am the old man, I was the motor pool officer from January 1955 until November 1955. The base came a long way from the Quonset huts I lived in and the unpaved roads we enjoyed. Friđţór Eydal sent me some pictures of how it was and a copy of his pictorial history of the base he published when it closed.
Beth 29-May-2008 23:09
Ken, your photos are amazingly beautiful. Thanks giving me the link. So glad I tracked you down. I'm excited to show these to my son Ethan who really enjoys photography.

I was stationed at the Command Post on Keflavik from Sept 89 to Sept 90 as an Air Force SrA and SSgt. I had a blast, visiting the "Borg" hotel downtown (during the days when the curfew meant you could not be offbase after midnight without a hotel room), the Fried Yza Fish and Chips at the USO (Hmmm, hmmm)and the 3 day trip I made to Akureyri (northern capital). I also went to the Blue Lagoon often, trips to the Hard Rock Cafe in Reykavik, and played golf where the rough was not tall grass, but rock beds, lol. I loved the time I spent there, and there are many beautiful waterfalls and sites to see.

Great photo of the ROCK. Makes me home sick. I was at Kef from Oct 82 thru Oct 83 in the CBPO. Traveled to Rockville and Hofn many a time for official business and some time just to get away for a change. Is anyone outhere who was on the island during the same period. Be great to hear from someone. Wouldn't it have been great to have had the internet back in those days. All is gone now, no more good assignments left in the AF like the old days.

Hi,

I was the Rereation dir at Rockville from 1976-1981 when I went to work at the American Embassy in Reykjavik. I had great time working at Rockville during this time. The best commader was LtCol Keith DeMott and I also remeber Robinette, the Security Officer, he was great. Rockwille went to major rehab during my stay there, we started the local radio and tv at the site and during this time, there was curfew from 20:00 til 06:00 but we managed to get exceptions for Rockwillers to go to the clubs in Reykjavik.
Ed Paxton 18-Oct-2007 03:41
Stationed there from May 91 to Apr 92. I can honestly say that was my best assignment ever. In that short year, I keep in touch with more people during that time than any other assignment I have been at.

Thanks for the memories,

Ed Paxton

Was at Rockville (H1) 12/68 thru 6/69 TDY on loan from Melville which is just outside The Goose. Loved Iceland, the people, going out on Gunnars trawler, the Loftleidir on Saturday nights and going to Selfos. Hope to be able to take my wife Ann there on vacation.

I like your church photos. I spent three weeks driving around the country in 1999 and took pictures of 305 churches. They were deposited with the Lutheran Bishop and the National Archives. Most of the snaps were good because I hit an amazing spell of brilliant weather.

Wonderful pictures of Iceland. I was stationed at Hofn H-3 From 1981-1982. I was a heavy equipment operator assigned to the Radar Site. I loved it, the Icelandic people and if I had been single, I would have stayed there. The pictures brought back wonderful memories of my year assignment in Iceland.

I was stationed at H-2 in 60&61. I was there the night h-2 lost its bubble. Shortly after we moved to H-3 which we had to reopen. Didn't get a chance to see much of the country as we were not allowed to leave the site except for mail runs to town. What i did see of the country was beautiful.

Derek Adamczyk 16-Dec-2003 14:52
Hello,

My name is Derek and I just looked at the pictures in your Iceland gallery. What a good job and beautiful photos! I was born in Poland and since childhood I've been living in Chicago.
Since I remember I have been interested in European countries, their culture and heritage. Right now I am reading and learning about Iceland, kind of a next step after Scandinavia. My intrest in these matters comes from my family heritage.
My great-grandfather was Russian, my grandfather was an englishman from Birmingham and my dad is Polish. After my reading and research I try to visit those places, so I hope to see Iceland in person some time in the future. Thanks very much for such a nice gallery
of Iceland. Happy Holidays!
Derek.

Godafoss is correct for the falls depicted. Godafoss is way up north east of Akureyri. Gullfoss is a different waterfall on the Golden Circle. I don't have any digital shots of Gullfoss. Maybe I can scan some prints I have of Gullfoss and post them.

Hello Ken,
some beautifull pictures you've got, particularly the Iceland ones. I've spend 3 weeks in Iceland on a motorcycle tour in 1998 (unfortunately in my pre-digital days, so you won't find an Iceland gallerie on my PBase). Too short to get an in depth view like you must have had, but long enough to realize that Iceland is one of the most amazing places on this earth.
Thanks for sharing your pics,
Danny

Hi Ken,

I'm from Holland (Afferden - very small town) and I was looking on the web for photos of Iceland. You've been very busy I see :). Very extensive and quite good. We will be going to Iceland this summer (1st time), camping and touring for 2 weeks. Looking very much forward to it and your photos simply increase the longing to go!

Keep up the good work!

Best regards, Hylke

Dear Ken,
Your pictures are just wonderful. They immediately brought back memories of the two years my husband and I spent there in the mid 90s. It seems as if we hung out in a number of the same places - the lighthouses at Gardur were favorites of ours too. I could feel the wind and rain, and smell the fresh air (and the sulphuric mudpots too) as I looked at them.
Thanks for sharing such beautiful memories.
Mary

Dear Ken, Thanks for your photos, I was in Iceland in Dec. over Xmas and NY's Eve! It was
beautiful and not too cold, they were having the warmest Dec. in 100 years, or something!
None of my photos turned out, the camera was broken! Now I want to return, maybe this Nov
I can fly direct from either Minneapolis or Baltimore, nonstop. When the sun was setting
on the snowy landscape, everything turned a beautiful pink and blue!! It was really sooo
beautiful, I am heartbroken that my photos didn't turn out. Wish you could have more
photos taken in winter, in that light! (just in case I can't make it back..) Thanks
again! Ellie

Good job, Ken! I found your information at radomes.org and I wanted to see some of the other places where AC&W personnel served. Having been stationed at a remote AC&W site at King Salmon, Alaska in 1957/1958, I understand the lonely, cold, snow filled nights viewing the skies while being vigilant in protecting America. We all did a great service for this country, and I salute the young men & women currently deployed around the world in God-forsaken locations like where we served. I have been trying for a number of years to locate anyone having pictures of King Salmon; if you know of anyone, please e-mail me.
Congratulations on a job well done! v/r, Edward

THE PHOTOS ARE BEAUTIFUL. HAVING BEEN AT ROCKVILLE, H-1, 58-59, WE WERE NOT ALLOWED OFF BASE EXCEPT TO GO TO KEFLAVIK. WE MISSED MUCH OF WHAT ICELAND HAD TO OFFER. MY MAIN LIFE FOR THAT YEAR CONSISTED OF THE SITE POWER PLANT.

I was at the southeast radar site at Hofn (Hopnahornafjordur, I think)
from July 1977 through April 1978. I guess you didn't get out that
far.

Beautiful pictures. My camera broke while I was up there.

Great photography! Iceland and Icelanders are most photogenic! You have recorded that delightfully.
I was stationed with the USAF at Rockville, Keflavik in 1955-56. I have been back there twice, in 1995 and 1999. Have toured much of the western side of the Country.
Still have Icelandic friends in Keflavik.
Thanks for your art and work.
Happy holidays.

I'm still wondering how you got that fly macro...??? Intense stuff in that gallery. I also very much enjoyed the Iceland pics... the Aurora Borealis reminds me of here. I KNOW how hard it is to get aurora shots!

Glad you liked my Alaska gallery... and thanx for the comments. Hope you get to make it back up here sometime. Anchortown has changed a bit. :-) Fairbanks also.

I found your page for "newbies" from Keflavik NAS. I just transferred from Iceland in April 2001 after 5 straiught years there and noticed that many of the photos from Flower Housing were taken from what looks to be where I lived, which was in Building 1218 third floor center. Good photos, brings back memories already. Sure wish I could go back for a 4th tour there. Iceland is a great place to be stationed!
