The old east coast Flagler's Overseas Railway was demaged by the 1935 Labor Day hurricane in the Florida Keys. Reconstruction afterwards of the US-I highway was built above the old railway bridges, to make the roadway wider. Although the roadways were still very narrow, while mirrors touched one another from both lanes of coming and ongoing traffic, as the vehicles could hardley even pass one another.
