A Long, Hot Summer

West Virginia

In 1941 H. Edward Steele, manager of the Bluefield Chamber of Commerce, developed a plan to promote the area’s pleasant summer climate by agreeing to serve free lemonade when the temperature reached an official 90 degrees. The lemonade tradition continues today in Bluefield, West Virginia, which has become known as "Nature’s Air Conditioned City."

Hi Karen,
A wonderful human interest story and shot. The temperatures have been soaring all over it seems. This is the long hot summer...But maybe not so long for us here in Michigan. LOL \/

What a fantastic tradition for the City. Only 189 days above 90 deg since 1939 is a very low average. Very nice shot Karen.

It is a fun tradition. I'm wondering however how long it will last, when global warming will give you that all summer long!

Great shot, Karen! I miss those "free lemonade" days!

I agree with everything below and that your photography can be so deliciously "slice of life" and authentic!
Keep up your sensitive and creative work.

Nice tradition, mind you at 90 degrees or more it's a wonder there's anyone on the streets.
We would look for an air conditioned store.

What a refreshing bit of community spirit, Karen. With those high temps, I'm sure the lemonade stand did a brisk business. Vote
Best regards,
Dick:)

That is a grand tradition.
Maybe we should use Bluefield as a benchmark, over the years, to tell if we are experiencing 'Global Warming'.

Karen I love this story. It fills my heart with why I love the south thoughts. Thanks for sharing.

That sounds like a great idea on a hot day.
They look as if they're singing :-)
