Just wanted to say how much I enjoy my tours around West Virginia via your wonderful photos. As well, I enjoy your creative eye which sees so much in every day things. Terrific work!
Wow Karen! This is quite a portfolio!

I came upon your gallery by accident, spent some time looking at all your photos. Very well done. Please feel free to visit my little corner of pbase.
love ur pics !
Greetings Karen ~
I just wanted to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and the Happiest and Healthiest of New Years!
Many thanks Karen for your nice comment and vote on my image...
When the forecast is rain you are the little bit of sunshine that gets in. Thank you. I really appreciate it. I really do.
xxxooo All the best Karen,
And even when the forecast isn't rain.
Great photo-journalistic shots! You take everyday things & make them interesting whether being an "outsider" or someone which lives here in WV
Thanks for sharing these great photos,
Betty of Guernsey CO OH
Karen, I guess I was at this site back in 2004. I had forgot about it until I started talking about Paint Creek cementery, Greencastle, today. One of the pictures that I looked at, (has fence in background) looks like Greencastle. I have been going there for about 15 years, have missed the last 4 or 5 but plan on going the first Sun. in June.
Hey there Karen.
At the risk of stating the obvious, your photos are beautiful and their composition and content provide us with a glimpse of your talent and depth of character. You're ability to capture images that prevoke such emotion is truely a precious gift. As a seemingly "successful" indentured servant of "middle class" America, "living" and working in a large tech hub that I loath more with each passing day, I am at once envious, ashamed and angered by your WV work.
Many thanks. Keep doing that which you do, so obviously well.
Hello Kare! Beautiful fhotos! Congratulations for you!

I'd like information on Gaylord White. I have lived in Bluefield for 33 years until a few years ago. I'd heard things about Lake shawnee a couple of times but never knew the whole story. My family and I would like to take this tour but we'd like to get permission first so if you have any details i would appreciate it. Thank you very much.
I hope you had a Merry Christmas and wish you a good 2009.
Your photographs are wonderful!
I came here quite by accident while looking for a book on opossums. I will return. I live in Ca.
I am a native West Virginian now living in South Carolina and I just wanted to thank you for your beautiful images. I have been so homesick lately they made cry.
Very nice photos. I enjoyed your comments about MTR and the coal industry. Also to words to "Paradise." I'm from a blue-grass pickin' family and we sing that one. My grandmother was born in Lumberport, WVA (Miller family) and I've always had a soft spot for WVA. I,m from PA.
Keep up the good work.
You take wonderful photos. The pictures of the Shawnee Park are very good. Thanks for your insight with your lens
Thanks Karen for the nice comment on my snow image...
I looked and love them-especially love your mist photos-you capture spooky so well. Love it. Jean
Jean, there are new photos. Click on my profile page, then on the "recent" link at top. It will bring up newer photos. Email me. My email address is also on my profile page.
In my research of Mercer County, West Virginia I was pleased to come across your website. Your pictures are heart warming.
The article which states comments about the Service Employees International Union/SEIU is an erroneous contradiction of the truth. Apparently the writer of the article was ill informed. There is no mandate for any employee to be or not be a member of SEIU. The SEIU over sees that the Federal Goverment Labor Laws and Fair Employment Practices, etc are in compliance by employers of its members.
You are exstremely talented! Thanks for sharing your photos! Alot of emotion can be felt by looking at them!
Your photos are PHENOMENAL! Thanks so much for the beautiful pictures of west virginia and for the writings. Your work is amazing.
sorry I for got to send big hugs --John
Hi ms karen
I notice the excellent color and detail you get out of you k10
I thinking of the new k20 mostly because of the sensor
roumers have claimed the that it is very nose free at 100 iso
and that would be perfect for me.
but I have some feeling about the flash systm.
what do you think of the quality of pentax and the flash system
thanks for the help
Hi Karen. Thanks for stopping by. :)
Lowve your shawnee village pics-great composition and you captured the essence of spook masterfully-I have a photo I made of the ferris wheel from the road as my screensaver. Love the photos-would love to walk the ground sometime.

is a brillianly composed and created photo
you better be careful you talent is showing
For some reason, your pictures really cheered me up.
I enjoyed looking at your galleries Karen..will be back to look some more. Thanks for sharing!
Your photos have opened a new way for me to seeing the world.
Thanks for stopping by my galleries again. And just so you know, I would never have known about Brushy Creek if I hadn't looked at your galleries. So thank you.
Kathy in Princeton, WV
Great photos, Karen.
I ran across them while doing a google search for info on the Battle of Pigion Roost. The cemetery where the Pigeon Roost monument is located is not too far from my house and when I was growing up I had an aunt, uncle & cousin who lived on the other side of the cemetery & their property joined it. We used to play in the cemetery when we were kids.
Keep up the good work. I have some great shots of the "new" Clay Cemetery at Lake Shawnee. Guess I'll have to join pbase & post them!
As fellow Irked writer, I wanted to thank you for your article. The photos are stunning, the experience is real. Fantastic work and a fantastic soul.
Reaching Up For Air
I enjoy your photo's. I would point out however that the coal mining industry is very important to West Virginia. Further, UMWA miners are safer. Its really a union thing.
I enjoy visiting your galleries. Thank you for your visits and comments to my site. I am happy to share this wonderful experience with someone who also enjoys photography.
Your galleries are eye-openners. Such moving and powerful images. Excellent work. I'm looking forward to see you back in perfect shape. My prayers and thoughts be with you.
Karen - A nice array of Photos - nice work - WV is a wonderful place to shoot
What a great perspective/eye for the subject of your photographs!!! I can only hope to train myself to reach this level..... I was raised in Southern WV and know many of the photos you have taken. I really appreciate and enjoy your talent... Keep up the GREAT work!! Some of the photos in the Train Yard are close to my office..... I look forward to see whats coming next!!
Anyone with an email ad in pipestem. please contact me. I was raised at pipestem a long time ago. Thanks fo much for the memories
I have been browsing through your images this morning, they are truly wonderful. You have an excellent collection of photographs with a wide array of topics. I will stop by often as I have really enjoyed your work.
I have really enjoyed and been impressed with your photos for awhile. You capture shots that make me want to be there. I like the way you think on photos. I was born in Kentucky.
why are you using a picture of my house on the web site without my permission. I live in Athens and my house is the one on the web site. Please let me know. No one in my family gave you the rights to use or sell those photos.
Modern living had isolated man from his enviroment and self. So much is covered and cleaned and hidden behind facades of sophistication. You bring us back to real life and real people and real emotion. I do appreciate the times in the past you were busy living life as well as the time you take to share with us when you can.
Enjoyed looking at your collection.
I visited again. Glad I did. You never disappoint.
When you get a chance, check out my Cityscapes gallery.
Happt New Year
I really enjoyed your images, and using the directions you provided, visited Brushy Creek a couple of times. You have a wonderfully unique perspective on life that is reflected in your photography.
Life changing work! I showed my kids, aged 9 and 11 your galleries, Possum Man and Hidden Appalachia. Very eye-opening and enlightening for them. Thanks for visiting my Moundsville State Penitentiary Gallery. You are a strong, intelligent woman with lots of talent.
Can i contact you on skills of photography. I am currently a learning Photo journalist and i love your work. I would love to get some insight on your work and how you find it.. I want to photograph Georgia in the way you worked West Virginia..Thanks for sharing your work with us...
You do amazing work! Thanks for sharing things and places very personal to you. Please visit my new gallery when you have time...lots of history
Enjoyed your photos! I grew up in Princeton, been away over 15 years now. God Bless you in your recovery!
Wat een prachtige vernieuwde website. Heldere opzet en ook een goede kleurstelling. Mooi.
Met vriendelijke groeten
I love your pics. I'm 17 and I live in Princeton, WV, so I am familiar with the scenes. It would be great to see some more pics of downtown Princeton, Bluefield, and anywhere that shows the beauty and history of living here. Keep up the great work.
Karen, I've just spent an hour or so looking at your galleries. I've found your site today and must say it is so important what you do. You are strong and soft at the same time. You love people and you love life. And you are getting it back.
All my best wishes to you and your work.
And also you are a very good observer, photographer and writer/reporter. Brave and talented woman, what else to add? :-)
Greetings from Poland.
Thanks for visiting my PaD gallery.
It is much appreciated.
Your work continues to be an inspiration. Thanks for sharing.

Salvatore Toto' Chiaramonte
I love your bitter and sweet slice of life.
I really enjoyed looking at the pics. I am from West Va. (Fayetteville)
Karen I stumbled on to your images since I recently traveled through a part of West Virginia and wanted to see more of the state by looking at your pictures. I really enjoyed your photos and stories. I have bookmared your site and will come back often. You are a talented writer in addition to your skill in the art of photography. I wish you the best. ron.
Your images are so true. You are very skilled in your ability to capture emotion with a photo. Thank you for sharing your story.
(I too live in West Virginia, my homepage is:
there are many photos you may enjoy)
i study architecture and happen to love more and more brick and wood so please it would be fantastic if you could send me some more pics of that kind at email@example.com anyway thanks a lot
Just wanted to stop by and say hello. It has been way too long
Karen, Pink Floyd made an album years ago titled "Dark Side Of The Moon". I was just making a joke about the photo I used. Thanks for stopping by and viewing it!
I have been a lurker at dpreview for the past few years. I've always enjoyed your photos and stories that went with them. Today I saw the Recovery gallery. I read every caption on every picture. If someone can read that and not feel anything there is something wrong with them. You are a great photographer and the thoughts and insight that go with it is extraordinary. You have a real talent and a gift Karen, I wish nothing but the best for you. You will probably help more people than you will ever know. Just remember you have someone in Wisconsin keeping good thoughts for you.
I came across your website while on pbase and I would like to commend you for what you are doing. Taking the necessary steps to get well. It must not be easy doing it cold turkey much less publicizing it right here on pbase. You seem to have the strength that most addicts would love to have so keep up the good work and take care. Let us know how you are doing and if you need to talk, we are only an email away.
Thank you for sharing your love, talent and moving photos in your wonderful galleries. All best wishes...
Karen, I stand and applaud your winning of the battle..outstanding!! Your gallery is full of great photography as well. You shohuld be proud of yourself...I am.
Karen, You communicate so well with your pictures. There is a bit of "you" in each one. I've spent time looking through all of your Galleries and I read you as a very distinct photo-journalist. Thank you for letting me share your world, the good, the bad, and the beautiful. No one can ever fully understand the pain of addiction or withdrawal unless they have gone through it themselves. You've let the world "walk in your shoes" so well. Thank you.
You are one brave woman! Have all the power from Chile.
Thank you for sharing Karen - my heart goes out! Best regards from Germany!
I thought you'd been pretty quiet for awhile. Absolutely love today's px - "Will to survive" in more ways than one. It's beautiful. I know you'll make it because you also have the will to survive. Being quite a bit older than you, I can tell you that having material possessions doesn't make one happy. Observe the rich and powerful - they are never satisfied with what they have and always want more. If your surroundings give you that inner peace that you need to survive, so be it. I have been ill for over a month now and can tell you I appreciate every breath of fresh air, field of weeds and wildflowers, clouds in the sky, etc. I wish you the strength, will, and grace to gain back your inner peace.
I grew up in a little town called Spencer, West Virginia and you have captured the beauty of our great state. Now living in southern Indiania, flat and nothing but cornfields, these pictures have really made me homesick!
Great photos, great technique. Be proud of them!
Karen, your galleries are just wonderful. I didn't recognize your name until you left me a second comment on my gallery. Didn't get a chance to look at everything, but I love your cemetery gallery. Your pictures tell the stories so well. You have a special gift, thanks for sharing it with us.
You have a great gallery of pictures. I live in Vancouver Washington and have never been to that part of the country but you sure show the beauty of it in your work. I love the old buildings as well as the scenic countryside. As someone said in an earlier post, that part of the countryside is disappearing. The pastor of the church that I go to grew up in West Virginia. I am going to send the link to him. I'm sure he will enjoy your gallery as much as I have. Keep the pictures coming. Thanks so much.
You are now in my favorites. Interesting images. Looking forward to more. Keep clickin'
I was so happy to see that your gallery on addiction became a favorite. Your gallery about the woman living with her dogs in poverty is also beautiful and touching. I love pbase because it brings people closer together by enabling us to see through each other's eyes. You don't turn away from disturbing sights, but bring the beauty of compassion and oneness to them. Thank you.
You do an excellent job of showcasing West Virginia in all its beauty and its not-so-beautiful. Your pictures seem to be a combination of travelogue and documentary. Thanks for the tour Karen.
Roger Van Mierlo

Merry Christmas Karen!
Thanks for keeping me in touch with home. You have some great photos. Love the bridge day gallery....
Aloha from Hawaii.
I'm still in shock. I stumbled onto your site this morning at work & did a doubletake when I saw your name. A great surprise. I haven't taken time to view the photos yet, but will certainly do so with much anticipated pleasure. Give my love to Vic please and keep in touch. Linda & Kenny
Thanks so much leaving that very kind message in my guestbook. I am delighted that my galleries have been of such help to you in your photography. I hope you can actually apply some of the things I demonstrate with my examples...I just checked your own galleries, and I found two examples that are quite expressive. Your shot of the air conditioned outhouse, while literal in form, is certainly incongruous. And your cemetery closeup -- the only you call "creepy" is a very powerful image because of the softly focused face that the very sharp cracked glass that covers it.
Your comment defines the reasons why I post on pbase. I am a teacher, and I use my galleries to help others learn how to express ideas photographically. Keep coming back -- you will find new ideas all the time. And I will also be expanding the galleries as I travel to new places, such as Antarctica in December and China and Tibet in June. Feel free to leave comments on my individual pictures, or drop me an email if you ever have anything you would like to discuss with me at length.
beautiful pictures. thank you for sharing.
This is too cute for words. Me thunks you need a separate album just for Puffy......and title it something like 'The World According to Puffy'. You already have the makings of some great shots.
Thank-you for posting your marvelous pictures!
It's wonderful pics.I like it.Thanks.
