Platelet Separation

This is the belt used in the cell separator. It spins at high speed to separate whole blood into different components. The entire process uses a single, closed, disposable set. No blood comes into direct contact with the machine.

Platelets are at the top. The nurse is using the cell separator to pull the platelets back through the cell separator. They will be suspended in the large bag of plasma. That bag will be divided into two or three units of single-donor platlets.

On the bottom are some red cells. Most have been returned to me during the rinseback at the end of the donation.
