Cambodia is a beautiful beautiful country with one of the friendliest people I have ever met. Yet it suffered enormously in the last 30 years of 20th century. The country was first a theatre for largest bombing campaign in the history of mankind, conducted by US, without ever declaring war on the country, then a victim of the most bloodthirthtiest and deranged totalitarian regime in the world, then a scene of the bitter and prolonged civil war. Although big swathes of countryside have been cleared up thanks to international humanitarian efforts, thousands of tonnes of unexploded ordnance and landmines remain hidden in the ground - to be found or stepped on by kids - like the one in the pictures below.
