3rd place: "Early Morning Snow" by Albert Yanowich Jr.

Colorado USA

My environment is mainly on the road this time of year. My only regret is I don't always have the time to stop and shoot more. This was my "backyard" this morning in Crested Butte, Colorado.

Thanks Rick and Shelby! If nothing else Rick... at least use the black to white boxes present in all the DPreview reviews and set your brightness/contrast.
Ain't it the truth though Shelby? I think someone's already snagged this place... notice the light on in the 3rd window:) - Albert

Hi Albert,
Another great one. Over here that would rent for at least a kilobuck a month, utilities extra :-).

I can now see why these contests use "real" prints -- as the roof-top [on my laptop] is now a solid block of white and the foreground looks surreal. I can now better understand some of my printing issues. If the image looks correctly processed on everyone's monitors, mine is absolutely out of wack. Great image Albert. LVPG

Definitely better now :-)
Flick.

Yeah... I pulled a little curve in the 224 range and brought it down about 5 pts. Flick. I think this last upload is a better medium between the two versions. - Albert

I think it depends what you're viewing it on. My very large, bright, contrasty Formac makes it too harsh now. but then i never printed on grade five paper either (once the novelty wore off).
Flick.

Well thanks Tim so much for your input! I've reuploaded per your levels specs and I think it looks better too:) - Albert

This is my favourite shot so far. If I lived in your back yard, I wouldn't go far away! Now this is purely a matter of taste but I liked it so much I took it into Photoshop and played around, because I wanted a little bit more punch to it, and after much messing around I found that Levels > RGB > Input Levels 0, 0.81, 209 worked perfectly for my eyes and monitor. I showed it to a friend, compared to the original, and he agreed. Tim.

Yeah, my summer home. Not very water resistant this time of year:) I trust you had a good trip? - Albert

Hi Albert - is that your roof?
It's a lovely shot the sunlight really makes it. Jono

Ah yes, that is better! Glad it wasn't my old eyes deceiving me yet. To add to my earlier comment, I also like very much how this image teases me into wanting to think it is a sepia toned monochrome, (colour and subject). Very beguiling indeed. ;-)

Thank you all! I've corrected the image (you were right Nigel... about 5-7 pts diff) with the "Milky Glass" correction... and it should look better now:) -Albert

I love the glow along the top edge of the photo. It seems to lift up the whole scene and make it float.

That scene and colours really please me, Albert. Fabulous delicacy, and a great example of how the camera can render all those lovely brown tones. My only reservation is, there appears to me to be a faint green cast running down the extreme left hand edge about 1/8th the way across (or less). Is it just me?

Lovely, tranquil image, Albert.
You've got snow? Wow! We've only just had the first frost, and we still have some green leaves.
Flick.
