This is an early model L lens with excellent optical performance at all aperatures.

These are the same images that are presented in my main galleries but here they are sorted into separate galleries according to lens. This lens uses an "arc form drive" and is noisier and somewhat slower than an "ultra sonic motor". I tend to use my 135/2.0L with the Canon 1.4x TC for sports rather than this lens. I think the widest aperature (f/5.6) is more of a limitation for sports rather than focus speed. For distant subjects that are moving rapidly, choose the longest fastest (widest aperature) prime lens that you can afford or consider renting one for special events. Think of the 100-300/5.6L as an inexpensive good-quality light-weight recreational lens rather than a sports lens.

Hi Mark,

I am interesting in this lens, but have a question regarding the its capability on shot sports @ 300mm, would its AF keep up with fast moving objects like running, skating etc, might not need for car racing though.

Hi Daniella,

Thanks for visiting my galleries. I've added "Minke Whale" which was taken at 300mm. I don't normally work at the long end of this lens - it's performance is still good at 300mm, I just seem to take more pictures in the short-to-middle range of this lens and only go out to 300mm in special circumstances.

i especially like the "canoe on the lake" and "across the bay" shots, very good contrast
but very natural.

i aslo have this lens, but i don't have a camera to test it yet. great color and contrast
were the main reasons that i made the purchase. i also find the lens pretty light weight
to carry.
