Amalfi is the largest town of the Amalfi Coast, famous for its beauty. It was an independent republic with 70,000 people during Byzantine times and one of the great naval powers. Vanquished by the Normans in 1131 and devasted by an earthquake in 1343, there is still the odd remnant of Amalfi's past glories around today. We recommend to visit the Byzantine Cathedral of Sant’ Andrea, founded in the 9th century but rebuilt in the 13th.
