The transition

After messing up big time at last weekend's grad I was determined to try to do better today. Gym lighting, lots of misc stuff surrounding the podium, sitting ~15 rows up about 3/4 way down the basketball court. Underexposed even at 1600, but needed to keep the SS a little high (at 200mm!) darn near impossible. Tri or mono pod out of the question. According to the Canon software focus was dead on ( I mean DEAD on) Andrea's right eye, and yet she is a little OOF, and the speaker seems to be good and sharp. Anyone know about focusing technique or is it a calibration/back/side focus problem?

Mom is still in the hospital, feeling pretty depressed she's not home. Hopefully her regualr doc can get in tomorrow to see what's going on. The staff doc got her case on Friday so the reg doc could have a long weekend. Thanks for your continued prayers and thoughts.

1. Yea, I noticed you 'studio' types get worked up when you cannot arrange all the elements of a picture - welcome to the real world! LOL (only teasing...)

2. You captured the moment perfectly - bet in 5 years time she'll enjoy this more than the 'official' pictures.

3. My 300D changes the focus even when you pre-focus with shutter button half-way - sometimes not always. Maybe she did move?

4. Love and best wishes to your Mom. Hope she's home soon.

don't know what you mean about the focus being dead on so I can't help you with the technical question, but as far as happy family snapshots go I'd say you collected another real winner here.

I think it's a great capture. Love that big smile. No exif so maybe small aperature? I've found with smaller aperatures everything in focus has to be the same distance from the lens. However, I don't think there's a thing wrong with this pic. Tell your mom to hang in there. They never release people over the weekend.

Robin Reid22-May-2006 05:56
Well done. Was it slight movement with a slower shutter?

Nice shot under difficut conditions.
royalld22-May-2006 02:58
That is a great result for the conditions you described.
Hoping to hear good news from the regular doctor.
Guest 22-May-2006 02:50
maybe because andrea moved?? motion blur rather than you misfocussing??
sorry to hear about your mum...hope all is well
petesie22-May-2006 02:26
Congratulations, Andrea....love that dimple. More prayers coming your way. Hope there is good news tomorrow.
Guest 22-May-2006 02:18
Congrats Andrea.
My advise - for what it's worth - use autofocus only when it is obvious... i.e. use manual most of the time.
Hope you mother will soon be back home.
