The Old Storefronts Of Buffalo

A gallery of old storefronts found in Buffalo. Some were grocery stores, some may have been bars, liquor stores, or delicatessens; all have long since closed. As many of these buildings are very old, it is likely that they have housed a succession of businesses.

Does anybody remember a grocery store possible named Vincent's in the early 1960's? The man that owned it would have been around 73 years old and his wife 61.

I remember so many great small stores, bakeries and deli's of Buffalo. There was a grocery on the corner of Delavan and Parkdale, one on Grant not far from the pool, an Italian bakery on Grant (forget the cross street, but it was on a corner - a pretty big place and my friend worked there), on Hertel on the corner of Colvin, there was a kosher deli, and Sammy's of course, down the block. On the corner of Colvin and Kenmore there was a drug store. Great memories of a way of life gone. Change. Some for the good, some not. Thank you for piecing together so many of my memories!

When I was little we lived with my grandmother for a time. She lived on the corner of Eagle and Elm, it was the late 50's. She ran a rooming house with a laundry attached. I remember looking out of the window and seeing a bar by the name of Kubicks and a store on the other corner by the name of Shalala's.

My inlaws, The Gaglione's owned and operated ROBROY'S TAVERN on Main Street in Snyder, NY from 1960 until 1972. It would be nice to have that picture added here. I have one, but have no scanner to send it to you. Many a good time was had there. We all loved the place. It was one of the top 3 college hang-outs, Coles, Brunners and Robroys.

wow this sure brings back memories,i grew up in black rock, riverside and remember the store at the corner called "Joe's Market" in fact there was a store on almost every corner on roesch street till i reached my PS 65 on skillen street. i remember going into Joe's market and getting a big bag of candy for 5 cents..

In the late 50's and early 60's my mother, Margaret Moyer, and I, had a delicatessen at 453 Breckenridge (corner of Putnam). Last I looked it had also been converted to a residence as had the old TV repair shop next store. I very much remember Provenzano's on Ashland, not far from us. Every neighborhood had their own little store.

An item that goes along with my previous post. My mother used to get her fresh fish for the restaurant at the Brownrout Fish Market that was located on South side of Elmwood between Brayant St, and Hodge Ave. Used to be a Texaco gas station right next to the place on the Northeast Corner of Bryant and Elmwood Aves. The fish market used to serve fresh cooked seafood, fries, & coleslaw every evening. They were always swamped on Friday nights.

My Father & Mother owned and operated the Bryant Elms Restaurant that was located on the North side of Bryant St. between Elmwood & Ashland avenues during the late 1940's and early 1950's. My boyhood friend tells me that it is still there. Sure would like to obtain a picture of the place.

My Mom mentioned having gotten my picture taken in a photo stdio named " Swan Studio " in the '40s. Is there still such a place? Any history or background for this place?

I may be an old dope but these old stores and buildings are disappearing fast. Why they appeal to me, I don't know. I think it is important that we save as many as we can. each has a story in human lives and architecture.

What about Sammy's on Hertel and Hertel Pharmacy. Sammy's was the quintessential grocery store. The meat's hanging in the deli. The barrels filled with olives. I loved the smell in that place. Good friendly small time grocery atmosphere. I'd like to see a picture if the building is still there.

My Great Aunt Agnes owned a Bar/night club, Brogans. It had live entertainment but went under after the Thruway was built.

My Aunt Ann had a grocery store on Elk St. near the Bowling Alley many years ago. These are wonderful memories. Thanks for the reminder. Those were the GREAT OLD DAYS when we didn't have to worry the bad guys.
