As a young man I would drive by the
Basilica day and night. I worked alternating
shifts at Bethlehem Steel. The Basilica
was on my route to the plant. I marvelled
at the building. I thought how ostentatious
the place was. How garish even.
Thirty years later I had occasion to enter
the place. What I saw stunned me. It moved
me deeply. I experienced overwhelming emotion.
I was an atheist and at a lose to understand
how this building could effect me so.
I was drawn to the place and visited once
a week just so I could sit inside and
marvel at what I saw and felt.
Now at the age of 67 living in a foreign
country I find my self writing this letter
wearing a tee-shirt that I bought years
ago in the OLV gift shop. Total coincidence.
Who remembers who the Twist sisters were?
They are in a painting gathered with other
children at the feet of the Christ. It is in the
entrance of the church. Take a close look
at it. There are two little girls in the
painting with distinct features. The other
kids have "generic" faces. The sisters
posed for this picture. No on else in the
picture did. Have a look.
So much I could say about this truly spiritual
place. Perhaps someone reading this letter will
understand what I am talking about.

Wow. My daughter had emailed this to me and it brought back so many great memories. I have not lived in Buffalo for 10 years and I have to say it made me sad. Buffalo will always be home.

These are some of the nicest pictures I have seen of the Basilica. I am especialy tickled with the "side aisle" shot. I used to sing in the OLV choir when I lived in Buffalo and I was a cantor for the Basilica as well. I particularly remember trying to wear VERY quiet shoes so that when I walked from the choir loft to the front of the church to sing I wouldnt make noise. The first time I cantored I wore dress shoes which "click clacked" all the way down that long marble aisle floor. I was quite embaressed.

What beautiful pictures. My husband & I were married there in 1974. I remember how upset I was on our rehearsal night when we entered the basilica and saw that they were cleaning the ceiling and were told that we had to married at the side chapel rather than the main alter. It turned out to be beautiful & intimate surroundings for all our guests. It was a wonderful ceremony. Hopefully, Father Baker will become a Saint soon and the Basilica will get the attention that it most deserves. Thank you for your wonderful work.
