L.L. Bergers
11-OCT-2004 Karl R. Josker

L.L. Berger's

514 Main St. Buffalo

This was L.L. Berger's, a womans' fashion and acccessory store. It closed in 1991. It is my understanding that it is being converted to condominiums.

I remember my mother taking me here back in the mid 1960s. Elevators operated by classy women with white linen gloves. I believe it was the same for Hens & Kellys. AM&As and the Yankee Doodle Room restaurant. We could not afford to go to the Tea Room in Wm. Hengerers. Fond memories. It's a shame that class and professionalism no longer exist at department stores.

I have an old LL Berger plastic shopping bag. It is very old.

My mother began working at Bergers when she was 16, running the elevator. From there she graduated to several jobs at the store, eventually ending up as the Customer Service representative for the store. She also ordered all the gift boxes and wrapping paper. Mr. and Mrs. Berger gave her crystal goblets as a wedding present, and I still have them. Her employment extended for a total of 50 years and the employees were like a second family to her. It was such a classy store; all the women behind the counters wore dresses, high heels and pearls. Many of my clothes were from there, including my prom dress. So sad to know that, with few exceptions, elegant clothing stores like this are a thing of the past.

I have a stole from L.L. Berger which is embroidered with my grandmother's name. It's a beautiful stole but I'm not sure if it's real mink or not. Does anyone know if that's what was sold? I believe my grandmother owned it when she was around 50 which would have been around 1965, give or take 10 years. I used to love shopping downtown with her and going for lunch at the Yankee Doodle Restaurant!

2 other great buildings that housed Department Stores...the AM&A's building..of which they are trying to decide what do with and the old Hens and Kellys Store.

In the summertime, Berger's used to spray out spurts of the 'featured' perfume onto the street with these little jets attached near the display windows.
It was usually Estee Lauder.

When I was in high school, I used to buy my shoes (with my part time job money) from Berger's so I could be different from my classmates. 12.95 a pair was very pricey in the 1960's.
