Granada

3176 Main St. Buffalo

The Granada would show a movie for months and months, maybe three or four a year, if that many. Anyone know why?

Just discovered this site. What a joy. In response to the question of why the theaters would show a movie for months and months. Back then it was one theater, one movie. If you wanted to see a new release you had to come downtown. No cineplexes in malls back then. Usually the theaters were connected to a studio. The Granada was connected to Columbia. In those days, and I'm talking about my youth and going to these theaters. The Granada would offer one 8:00PM screening during the week with matinees on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Film was treated respectfully; overtures, curtains opening and closing, exit music. The theaters wanted to replicate a live stage performance. There were no continuous showings until the film wound up in local neighborhood theater. The Sound of Music was so popular it played at the Teck for over a year. When I saw Hello Dolly at the Century in 68-69. The seats were reserved. An usher actually took you to your seat. We'd always try to sneak up to the balcony, or "loge" as they called it because it cost 25cents more. inevitably, the usher would come by asking, "do you have loge tickets?" and then send us back downstairs. I could go on forever. Thanks for the site.

From what I've been told, what you see in the photo is all that's left of the Granada. The pizza place occupies what had been the lobby. The actual theatre auditorium which was behind it has been demolished.

I've been told that in order to get the better pictures, you had to book a film for a certain number of weeks. This may be the reason the Granada held pictures over a months at a time.

The Granada was most memorable as the home of the late night weekend screenings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show (with the usual audience participation). After the Granada closed, RHPS moved up Main to the Amherst theatre.
