The Dance Hall

The dance hall had six cells, three on either side of this center door that led to the death chamber. You were moved to the dance hall once your execution date had been set. To the right, not visible in this picture, was a padded cell, with only a drain in the center. Attached to the drain was a chain with a dog collar looking device on it. The chain prevented someone from reaching the bars on the front of the cell.

I worked at Sing-Sing first as a Correction Officer and then as a Sergeant in A-Block.
As a C.O. I worked in just about every post in the Facility. We had a riot in the yard
around September 1970,it started around 10:00am. We got out of the prison around 9:00pm.
My Lieutenant in 1970 was Joe Quinn a former Marine who served during WW-2. One hell of a man. Lt.Quinn retired and I remember Lt.Paul Kracht taking over as Watch Commander. I would like to mention Capt. William Gard, Sgt.Leonard Scott, Sgt.John McGinnis, my partner
C.O. Walter Knight who worked H.B.C. or Special Housing unit with me. C.O.s Marty See and Willie Tomson. In Memory of C.O. J.R. Taylor who was shot to death by a former inmate. I resigned in July 1993 after 22years and 11 months, My rank was Lieutenant. My reason for resigning was I was not an A.K. and I was quite disillusioned with Racial Quotas and self serving administrators. Especially the Civilians who became Superintendents and Deputy Supertendents without knowing anything about prisons. Convicts, Inmates, Residents,

I grew up in Westchester county (Greenburgh, NY) and had an uncle living in Ossining, NY. As a teenager I used to ride the bus (in the early 1980's) to Peekskill, NY to visit my friends (another small town on the Hudson River) and I distinctly being curious and a little nervous because we had to travel a road parallel to the Hudson River and directly beside Sing Sing.
