St. Adalbert's RC Basilica, 212 Stanislaus, Buffalo, NY

The parish of St. Adalbert was founded in 1886, amid much controversy. The present structure was built in 1891, and was designated America's first basilica in 1907. Today it appears intact, and in good repair, however, the organ does not appear functional, although I don't know that as a fact. What I do know is that the current rector, Father Bocianowski, is one of those individuals you meet now and again, who within minutes you feel like you've known them for a long time, and exudes a strong sense of purpose and leadership.

Well, it's 2 years later and ... looks like the place is still going strong. Every so often the people win. "Journey in faith & grace" ... what a crock.

Check out Broadway Fillmore Alive and see the wonderful St. Adalbert T-Shirts that are for sale. The workers were wearing them at the Broadway Market at Easter. So cute....Everyone should have one!!!

The process continues; looking for to a long time on Stanislaus Street.

Well It's a sad day for the people who actually lived and raised their children in the east side of Buffalo. I went to Transfiguration school,as a child and look what they did to the church... It was hard enough when they closed the school. It will be very sad to drive by to see another closed abandoned church.. Funny how the churches in the wealthy suburbs aren't touched..

As of 2/27/08, the Vatican has upheld Bishop Kmiec's decision to close St. Adalbert's. The church will soon be a mosque.

I remember with great JOY being an altar server at St. Adalbert's in the 1960's. I went to St. Adalberts School....love the Sisters...my parents are Zenon & Florence Sucharski....I pray, that the doors of St. Adalberts remains open...and the tile of Basilica is not taken away.....Rev. Michael Sucharski, S.V.D.

Re organ: The organ was a transplanted residence organ by Austin of Hartford, Connecticut. It was moved to the church by the Tellers Organ Company of Erie, Pennsylvania, who supplied the case and dummy case pipes. It has since been removed; the case is empty.

It's Spring 2005. I just met Sr. Johnice and was guided by the spirit to do the Response To Love Center website. There is a brand new video of Sister Johnice explaining the amazing work she and the volunteers are doing. See her again at:

As an alter boy in the 70,s I can still remenise to the most magnificant days of the church,Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sundays. The church was filled to capacity.
Monsigner Stelmach, Father Conrad and all the Felicians Sisters you taught me well. Faith, Love and hope made me survive.

Sister Johnice I remember your first day...

God be with you all...

This is a wonderful picture of the church's interior. I am in the process of doing a website for the Response to Love Center at St. Adalbert's. Would I be able to link to your picture or show it on the website? I can give the picture your credit for the photo on the website.
