Before there was a Route 66, there was the railroad, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, which ran from Chicago to southern California. From New Mexico to California, Route 66 shadowed the mighty Santa Fe's trackage. Route 66 eventually contributed to the demise of passenger train travel, but for the most part, both trackage and highway remain.
Mr Lawrence chronicles the coexisting routes relationship through the years. The book contains a collection of great photographs, which alone are worth seeking out.
