This is the Crescent Moon. The moon got very red as it approached the horizon. What you can't see is the water's edge as this picture is taken in near black conditions. The sequence of moon pictures show the progressive change in moon color as it ducked over the horizon.

The moon is barely above the water. It will soon drop over the edge of the Sea of Cortes. It takes on a very deep red as it disappears over the horizon.
