HMCS Fraser

The Moncton Dive Club was lucky enough to be invited to stay overnight on the decommisioned HMCS Fraser in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, the night before we dove the HMCS Saguenay, its sister ship. It was wonderful to walk the corridors and visit the bridge on land prior to visiting the like ship underwater. Many thanks to Rick Welsford and Dave Williams who made this possible!!!

I was down to Bridgewater a few weeks ago and was dismayed to see the condition of a grand lady of the sea. She lies rusting away forgotten at dockside. I served in her from Jan '67 to July '71. It was heartbreaking to see her neglected and rust stained. Although saddened by her condition, I stood quietly dockside and recalled many wonderful ports and shipmates during my years in her. Take her out and send her to the bottom with the dignity she deserves. Ex stoker Don Cale

I wrote this to the town of Bridgewater as well as Rick Welsford, thought that I might here as well.... It seems as though the warships upset the people within the town and surrounding areas due to the “unsightliness” they possess. I am unsure if people know the history behind these ships. Do they know how luxurious theses ships were? Just by googling the HMCS Fraser, I have come across so much interesting information. Maybe if they did they would be more sympathetic. I am not sure what the town can even do about the situation where it is operated by the Artificial Reef Society. My idea is a simple one. This is supposed to be a museum, why not make it just that. In a time of war, people have so much support directed towards our troops overseas. Just look at all of the ribbons on our cars, clothing and in front of our houses. Everyone knows someone in the forces that is going overseas, has been there or is there now. Everyone is affected by the consequences of war. Why not use this and turn the “museum” into something that will attract tourism. Make these ships, or at least one of them, into a memorial to our troops. To the men and women of our town and surrounding areas. I know that this will cost money, and the world revolves around money, but if people believe in something they can find it. You can have a gift shop inside the ship to sell items that support our troops, like the ones at some of the bases. You can have photos or our fallen men and women, the ones at battle, and the ones waiting to go to battle along the walls. Ask families for donations and have a plaque that states these names. Being in a family with military ties, I know strongly the troops feel about fighting for their country. You never hear a family of a fallen soldier saying that they didn’t die doing what they were meant to do. These families would be proud to have their son or daughters; husband or wives; brothers or sisters name on a dedication to all the blood, sweat and tears the endured fighting and training for what they believe. I have never been inside the ships to be honest, but I am sure that it is possible to find military items, past and present to decorate and make the museum into a museum. We had volunteers to upgrade the memorial at the cemetery, and I am sure that it would be possible to find volunteers to help with a project like this. Hopefully we can turn all of the negative comments into something wonderful with a little paint, imagination and love.

I served aboard Fraser from 1985 - 1987. I was an Electronic Warfare / Naval Electronics Sensor Operator. That picture of the Electronic Warfare Control Room sure brings back memories. I spent countless hours staring at the scope of the AN/WLR-1C (We called it the "Whirrly" for short) searching for radars. Most of the time it was all friendly stuff, but in those Cold War days it was sure a thrill when you picked up the radar of a genuine Soviet warship or aircraft, and were the first in the fleet to report it! That seat was something in rough weather. The Whirrly got nice and hot during operation, and the exhaust fans blew it all down on your lap. Imagine sitting in that chair in a very dark room, watching the CRT flash in your face, wearing a headset listening to burps and beeps, and everything rocking from side to side an heaving up and down, and your lap and associated parts sweating buckets. Let me tell ya, the ship wasn't the only thing doing the heaving! Thanks for posting these pictures, it really brought a smile to my face.

Sailed on her 1974-1978. Good memories {forgot the bad ones I guess) Tried to see her in summer 2005 but was closed. Lucky to have been able to get there, esp before diving on her sister, makes keeping bearings easier. The picture with the caption that said "more equipment' was the Electronic Warfare Control Room (old Radio 4) used to intercept other ships radar signals.

The racks inhttp://www.pbase.com/kiml/image/46339268 are for storing outboard motor fuel tanks for the Zodiac boats. I sailed in HMCS Fraser from April 92 - Sep 92 as a Naval Electronics Technician (Communications). Great photos...the old girl looks good.

Looking for info Re: Commander (ret.) Jeremy (Jerry) Gadd. I met Jerry as a young man in St. John's, NL in the mid-eighties while he was stationed at Communications Squadron 727(?) in YYT (Pleasantville). At that time I was very involved with the Commodore 64 and started a computer club thorough which I met Mr. Gadd. He supprted the computer club by allowing us to meet in the Officer's Mess Hall regularly. Dispite our age difference we became friends and he and his wife (Ann) treated me with kindness and respect. At one point Jerry encouraged me to consider a Navel career with his help. My interest lay with computers and I made a career that I'm still active with today. He then got stationed in YHZ and we lost touch. Just today I learned that sadly he passed away in 2004. I had always thought that one day I would look him up. I remember that he had mentioned that he was a Captain of a ship in the Navy prior to his posting in Pleasantville. In my research today I learned that he served on the HMCS Fraser. I would to contact Ann via e-mail. If anyone knows how to reach Mrs. Gadd I'd appreciate a note. Kindest regards, Greg Vincent

Awesome photos. I sailed on the Fraser for two years as a Sea King pilot. The ship carried us safely through many storms.
