26th April 2006The Temple of Heaven (天壇) is a complex of Taoist buildings located in southeastern part of Beijing. The significance of this temple comes during ancient China where the Emperor of China was regarded as the son of heaven and would, as a sign of respect to the source of his authority, would hold ceremonies and prayed for good harvests.
Unfortunately, the main building, the Hall of Annual Prayer (祈年殿) was not opened to the public due to the renovation works in preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. However, we were still able to walk around the complex to enjoy the surrounding gardens and views of the buildings.
