Saturday morning, and the forecast is a bit ominous (heavy snowfall warning for Central Alberta), but nonetheless Frank, Glenn, Rob and I are on the road South at 6:00 a.m. Brekkie is at Smitty's in Okotoks. Fast service, decent grub. By 10:15 a.m. we're on the water downstream of the Hwy 3 bridge. Turns out to be a relatively warm (8 degrees) and mostly calm day in the Pass. The boys catch a bunch of fish, 30+, while I on the other hand lose one lonely fish, land none, break a rod, and lose the freakin' hearing aid that I'm trying out. The fish are mostly feisty good-sized rainbows, but there is a brown and a cutty in there, as well as a bull trout, and of course the obligatory whitefish and sucker. Rob caught the sucker (sorry Rob!). Rob also catches a couple of rising rainbows, on a little dryfly midge pattern! Flies du jour included stonefly nymphs, little beadhead generic patterns, worm patterns. We get the last two rooms at the Highwood Motel in Blairmore, after finding "No Vacancy" signs at the BCMI Motels in Coleman and Blairmore. Apparently the combination of sledders, curlers, and hockey tournament players in town has the accomodations running low. Brokeback Mountain references abound when it looked as though one option might be sharing double beds. Off to the the Rum Runner in Coleman for burgers and beer! Actually, I have a scotch, while the other cowboys go through a few pitchers of beer, all the while admiring our well endowed hostess. We're back at our "bunkhouse" (staffed by a hilarious East Indian family) at about 10:30 p.m. or so, and watch the Oilers beat the Canucks.
