August 24, 2002 --- Elk River, British Columbia

It's Roper, "Johnny Two-Moose" and I, staying at Rick P.'s beautiful place in Fernie. We head down Friday night, and hit the Elk the next morning. We put in right in town, and float down to the Morrisey Bridge, 4 or 5 miles. Fine late August weather. The river is in fabulous shape, but still plenty strong enough that you really couldn't think about wading across anywhere, really. Lots of traffic, too. Driftboats everywhere in town, and several on our stretch. Nonetheless, we get our share of cutts, on i.e. Chernobyl Ant, Madame X, and Royal Wulff. Also, don't forget the streamers... John gets several on Muddler Minnow-type fly. We bang a rock pretty hard (Roper on the oars!) and start taking on water at a pretty good clip. New rule on the Elk this year; no motors. Guess I could have made an exception for "emergency", but as long as one guy kept bailing, we could keep fishing...
