April 18, 2002 --- San Pedro, Belize

Day Six dawns bright and sunny. John decides to go snorkeling today, so it's just me and Wilber. Wilber says that in all his years of guiding for tarpon, the most tarpon that he's boated in a day is 5; most hooked = 10. Compare with Casa Mar in Costa Rica (see Lefty Kreh's book). Anyhow, at about 8:00, I get a tarpon to take, but the hook is spit out immediately. We head over toward the mainland, get into some pretty good action for a spell. I finally hook a good fish - it makes 2 high jumps - looks huge - then runs back toward the boat... and comes undone. Ah well, nobody said this would be easy. We knock off a bit early. Wilber gives me his business card, I give him $250 tip. I'm not sure if the tip is adequate, and have a flashback to "Disappointing Carlos", an amusing book dealing with the misadventures of a tarpon novice and his impatient guide. Am I disappointing Wilber? Wilber tells me he has fished with Lefty Kreh, Mel Krieger and George Anderson (the latter using shooting heads), as well as the fly fishing distance casting champion from Japan. Funnily enough, he says that Mel Krieger could cast great, but couldn't see the fish, and couldn't hear :-) Note to self: if win lottery, check out Cayo Espanto, a resort on a private island near San Pedro- $1500 US per couple per night, 3 night minimum. John gets a wicked sunburn on his back today while out snorkeling :-(
