After an uneventful journey to San Pedro via Houston and Belize City, John McB. and I settle in last night at Ruby's Hotel ($47.50 U.S. per night per room) on the delightful island of Ambergris Caye, Belize. I finally talk to Mario Graniel, who is arranging for our guide, Wilber, who meets us at the dock at 7:00 this a.m. We decide to try for bones, and as advertised, the fish here are fairly plentiful, but not nearly the size of those in, say the Bahamas. We get a ton of chances in the morning, but these little bones are skittish in the shallow water. Over the day, we land 6, the biggest about a pound and a half. I also LDR one and get snapped off a couple of times (cuda, probably). John does pretty good for a rookie in the salt, lands 3 of the 6. None of the fish gets into the backing. We do, however, get shots at tailing fish in the a.m., and big schools of small bones "mudding" in the p.m. As usual, our guide Wilber has spooky-good vision... don't quite know how he finds the muds, but he does... Tarpon tomorrow? We'll see...
