We get up early (we heard from a Fisheries fellow that they had checked some 30 fishermen - mostly Americans - down here a couple of days ago!) and arrive at the fabled river at daylight. There are two young guys from Calgary getting geared up as we walk in, and they join us for the walk. One of them had been out here a couple of weeks ago, and had an idea what was working. We decide to explore upstream from the confluence (where they wanted to fish at first), which turns out to be a pretty flat and unproductive piece of water. By the time we get back to the confluence, it's time to head back up the tributary as per plan. The stream is low this year compared to last year at this time, but there are bullies in the pools nonetheless, and as usual, they have a serious case of lockjaw. I manage a couple of good fish on dries, but it is otherwise quiet from a "fish landed" perspective. Tonite we head over to Clint and Cindy's at St. Eugene, and supper is at the lounge at the casino. From the casino, it's a three-iron distance to our cabin on the banks of the St. Mary. There can't be too many places in the world where a world-class golf resort and casino sit next to a wilderness cutthroat stream, but St. Eugene Mission on the St. Mary River is one of them.
