Glengallan Homestead

The heritage-listed Glengallan Homestead is situated near Allora on the Darling Downs in Queensland
and was build in the 1860's. The original house was never finished. The house changed hands
several times and then was left derelict for about 70 years.
When we were children we sometime drove past this derelict 'spooky' looking house and we called it
the "Haunted House". I loved to think up stories about it.
Recently I was able to revisit the now restored homestead and see inside for the first time. This
house holds many stories including a mummified cat found under the floorboards when renovating. It
is thought it was put there deliberatly to ward off evil spirits (as was the custom in England at
the time) and so would have been there since the house was build.
The mummified cat is still there with a viewing window set into the floor in the corner of the lounge room so visitors can see it.
