The Amalia glacier is a tidewater glacier flowing down from the Andes into the Pitt Channel in the Chilean fjord region in about 51 degrees south latitude. Since the foot of the glacier is in the water, it sporadically calves off small, floating bergie bits. Some of these can be seen in the pictures. The weather in the Pitt Channel was a bit hazy and chilly but we got a good view of the glacier. After leaving the face of the glacier, we proceeded out Nelson Strait into the open Pacific where we encountered a brief squall with up to 60 mph winds but moderate seas. Shortly, we reentered protected water on our way through the Magellan Strait to Punta Arenas, Chile.
The Holland America MS Amsterdam arrived at Amalia glacier just as we were pulling away. They then followed us to Punta Arenas and all of the way through the Beagle Channel and to Cape Horn and the Falklands on following days. They appear often in the pictures that follow.
