There are large, abandoned sardine factories along Cannery Row in Monterey. Canning sardines was big business in Monterey. Not any more. Sardines still are still commercially fished, but not as in past years. Fishermen gather on the commercial wharf to fill their buckets and retell old stories when the sardines come into the bay. Brown pelicans also get into the act when the sardines arrive. They circle in the sky looking for the schools of fish. Once they spot the fish, the pelicans fall from the sky and dive into the water to catch the sardines in their beaks. It's an amazing sight.
