DSC_6773 Ge and Ding wares.jpg

The Ge ware kiln site has not yet been located. Ge ware existed in both the song and
Yaun dynastiesand was the first kiln to make deliberate use of the ice crackles in the
glaze as decoration. There were two types of Ge ware; one made with a porcelain body
and another with clay. The glaze colours were most often greyish green, followed by
powder green, pale green and moon white. It also featured "purple mouth and iron feet"
features, in which the dark body shows through the rim of the mouth at the base.

The Ding kiln was located in Quyang county, Jiancicun and Donxi Yanshancun of Hebei province,
and is most famous for it's white wares with refined bodies.
Items in other glaze colours of persimmon, black and reddish brown were also produced
though in much smaller quantities.
Decorating techniques on white ware include carving, incising and moulding, all executed
with exquisite craftmanship. Subjects include
floral motifs, birds, animals, fish and children at play.
The Ding kiln is responsible for introducing the technique of inverted firing to increase production.
The rims of bowls are left unglazed and placed upside down in a stack in saggars
for kiln firing.
