most of the shallow areas within the lagoon are referred to, by the locals, by name. Paris flat
is the area along the shoreline near the former village of Paris and is split into three parts,
Paris one two & three. Texas is a large flats area that starts after Paris three. This photo
is taken on “Texas flat”. There are many “pancake flats”, which are round and flat,
some are called “little pancake” others “big pancake”, some are named for countries,
like Poland and Canada, while there are some that bear the name of a person, eg. Rick’s.
Nine miles flat, smoking flat and star are others. Taina flat, ren flat and go like hell
flat are just a few of the hundreds of places in the lagoon at Kiritimati.
